Nifty Tools for Godot

Godot help that works without the editor running: res:// links and checks, scene outlines, $Node and %Unique completion from your scenes, input action names, signal handlers and run commands.

Maintained. No sign-in. No telemetry. Works in VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf, VSCodium and other editors that use Open VSX.

Features

Completing $ in a player script with the nodes of the scene it's attached to

A $Node path that isn't in the scene and an unknown input action, flagged in Problems

A .tscn scene shown as a node tree in the Outline, with its resources and signal connections

Most Godot help in VS Code comes from the Godot editor's language server, so it only works while the editor is open. Nifty Tools for Godot reads your scenes and project.godot itself, so these work any time. It sits happily next to the official godot-tools extension, which still does the syntax highlighting and the language server.

  • $Node and %Unique completion from your scenes. It finds the scenes that use a script and offers the nodes below the one the script is attached to: $Sprite, $"HUD/Score", get_node("…"), and the %UniqueName nodes. Ctrl+click jumps to the node in the .tscn, and hover shows its type and scene.
  • Input action names. Inside Input.is_action_pressed(", get_axis( and friends you get the actions from project.godot, plus the built-in ui_* ones. Ctrl+click opens the action's definition.
  • res:// everywhere. Complete paths in preload("res://…"), scenes and resources. Ctrl+click opens the file. A missing file is flagged, which is what usually breaks after a move or rename.
  • Scene files you can read. The outline shows .tscn files as a node tree, with their resources and signal connections, each with its own icon: nodes as classes, instanced scenes and resource files as files, scripts as modules, embedded resources as constants and connections as events. Ctrl+click ExtResource("1_abc") to reach the resource, and the method of a signal connection to reach the function in the script.
  • See where a script is used. A lens above each script lists the scenes and nodes it's attached to.
  • Catch mistakes before you press play: unknown input actions, $Paths that no longer exist in the scene (paths into instanced scenes are left alone), and %Names that aren't marked unique.
  • Run from VS Code. Run Project, Run This Scene (from a scene or a script attached to one) and Open in the Godot Editor. Script errors printed by the game (SCRIPT ERROR … at: (res://player.gd:12)) show up as problems on the right line. Turn on nifty.godot.godotKeys to use F5 and F6 as in Godot.
  • Works with Godot 4 and Godot 3 scene files. It recognises .gd, .tscn, .tres and .godot files even without other Godot extensions installed.
