Guttered Remote/WSL Helper

An optional desktop companion for Guttered's experimental glyph clicks in Windows VS Code connected to WSL, SSH, or a development container. Install this helper in the local Windows/client extension host and install the matching Guttered version in the WSL/remote workspace. It is not needed for local workspaces or for connecting to a hook that was already enabled in a local client window. Install it when you want to enable or restore the client patch from inside a remote window.

Install Guttered Remote/WSL Helper from the Visual Studio Marketplace, or use the matching helper VSIX from Guttered's GitHub releases. In the Extensions view, choose Install Locally for this helper; install the main Guttered extension in WSL or the remote workspace. Keep their versions matched.

Run Guttered: Enable Gutter Clicks (Experimental) from Guttered's Command Palette commands and reload the window. You can enable the hook in a local Windows workspace first, then open a WSL project; with this helper installed locally, the remote Guttered extension connects to the same Windows workbench hook. A plain left click on a Guttered marker opens the view selected by Guttered: Select Diff View: the native diff editor, or an experimental inline Quick Diff preview. In Quick Diff, select Guttered merge base if Git opens first. Right clicks, modifier clicks, breakpoints, and other glyph actions retain their native behavior.

The option belongs to the desktop client and is excluded from Settings Sync by default. It is off by default and requires a writable desktop VS Code installation. The helper appends a hook to the client workbench JavaScript with verified recovery artifacts. VS Code may show an installation-integrity warning. Updates may require re-enabling and reloading; updates are never patched automatically.

Guttered: Gutter Clicks Status reports the current connection. Run Guttered: Disable Gutter Clicks and Restore Workbench before removing the helper; it disables handling and restores the client installation. Other open windows need reloading after installation or restoration. The normal code-hover action, gutter menu, and both native diff modes remain available without injection.

The helper modifies only the desktop client's workbench file. Git, comparisons, and diff commands continue to run in the workspace extension host. Clicks use VS Code's built-in command/RPC routing with URI objects and a per-activation session, so VS Code handles the remote authority and file-path translation. No local HTTP server, port forwarding, or CSP changes are used. Browser-hosted VS Code is unsupported.
