Crypto Price Ticker Plus for VS Code

Monitor live public market prices in the Visual Studio Code status bar, and open a candlestick chart in the bottom panel — next to the terminal. Data comes from Binance and OKX read-only public market-data endpoints (tickers and klines). Stay updated with BTC, ETH, and any other supported pair while you code.

This is a fork of Mavis2103/Crypto-Tricker, with a K-line chart and other additions. Settings and commands keep the original crypto-price-ticker.* prefix so existing User settings still apply.

Privacy and data access

This extension is a price ticker, not a wallet or trading client.

• It only calls public, read-only market-data URLs (for example Binance ticker/24hr / klines, OKX market/tickers / market/candles).
• It does not access wallets, balances, orders, deposits, withdrawals, or trading.
• It never asks for a seed phrase, private key, or withdrawal-enabled credential.
• No account is required. The extension works anonymously over public endpoints.
• An optional exchange rate-limit token can be stored locally in VS Code Secret Storage (OS keychain) to raise public-endpoint quotas. Create that token on the exchange with read-only / market-data permissions only — never enable trade or withdraw.
• Tokens are not written to settings.json and are not sent anywhere except the matching exchange's public market-data API.

Installation

1. Open Visual Studio Code.
2. Go to the Extensions view (Ctrl+Shift+X).
3. Search for Crypto Price Ticker Plus and install it.
4. Or install directly from Visual Studio Marketplace.

How to Use

Folding the Ticker

The status bar shows a small pulse icon on the left. Prices are folded behind it by default to keep your status bar clean:

• Click the icon to show the crypto prices (the icon switches to a chart).
• Click it again to hide them.

Your choice is remembered for the next session. You can also run the Toggle Crypto Price Ticker command from the command palette (Ctrl+Shift+P).

K-line Chart

A graph-line icon sits to the left of the ticker. Click it to open the candlestick chart in the bottom panel:

The chart lives in its own Crypto tab, next to Terminal / Problems / Output. It follows one of your configured tickers, draws SVG candles, and shows the last price plus the change over the visible range:

You can also:

• Run Show K-line Chart from the command palette (Ctrl+Shift+P).
• Press Ctrl+Alt+K.

The chart only polls while the tab is visible. Hide or close it and network traffic stops. Resize the panel and the candles redraw from the data already in hand — no extra API call.

Configuration

Use ' Ctrl+, ' to Edit your VS Code settings.json to customize the extension, or use the Settings UI under Extensions → Crypto Price Ticker / K-line Chart:

Keep your settings out of git. The crypto-price-ticker.tickers setting is scoped to User settings on purpose — VS Code will refuse to write it into a workspace .vscode/settings.json, so it can never be committed to a repository. Open it with Ctrl+Shift+P → Preferences: Open User Settings (JSON).

Optional rate-limit token (public market data only)

The ticker and chart work without any credentials. If you hit exchange rate limits, you may store an optional token in VS Code Secret Storage (OS keychain) — never in settings files:

1. On Binance/OKX, create a key with read-only market-data permissions. Do not enable trade or withdraw.
2. Run Ctrl+Shift+P → Set Optional Rate-Limit Token (public market data only).
3. Pick the provider, then paste the token. Inputs are masked.
4. Run Clear Optional Rate-Limit Token to remove it.

The token is sent only to that exchange's public market-data endpoints, to raise the same read-only quota the anonymous IP already uses. If you previously stored values under crypto-price-ticker.providers in settings, they still work as a fallback, but a warning will nudge you toward Secret Storage.

Market Types

Each ticker can fetch from the spot market or a derivatives market:

A market a provider doesn't serve (e.g. swap on Binance) silently falls back to spot. The K-line chart uses the same provider and market as the ticker it follows.

Template Tags

Example:

The default template is {symbol}{market} {price}, which renders as BTCⓈ 67000.00 for a spot ticker and BTCⓂ 67000.00 for a futures one. Remove {market} from the template to hide the badge.

Rate-limit tokens are not set here — they are optional, and if you use one, store it with the command above (Secret Storage), not in settings.json.

Supported market-data providers

Public ticker and kline endpoints only:

• Binance — binance.com
• OKX — okx.com

Public API rate limits

Important: Both Binance and OKX enforce rate limits on their public market-data endpoints. A very low refresh interval or too many tickers may result in temporary throttling or incomplete data.

• Binance: API rate limits apply per IP and endpoint.
• OKX: API rate limits also apply per IP and endpoint.

Recommendation: Use a refresh interval of 60 seconds or higher and limit the number of tracked tickers. The chart has its own cadence (chartRefreshSeconds, default 15s) and stops polling when hidden. An optional read-only rate-limit token can raise the public quota; it is never required.
