Built by Ciro Cesar Maciel — because every other database client in VS Code became bloated, slow, or commercial nagware.

I built this extension for myself. I work with databases every day — PostgreSQL in production, MySQL in existing microservices, SQLite for local dev, and Redis for caching.

Existing database tools in VS Code kept making fatal compromises: they became closed-source commercial nagware interrupting your workflow every 15 minutes, silently shipped analytics phoning home your private database schemas, or shoved heavy, unoptimized Electron webviews that froze your entire editor when viewing a table with more than 2,000 rows.

So I built the database studio I actually wanted to use — and I'm sharing it.

Think of it as TablePlus speed meets VS Code native integration, with zero telemetry, local-first privacy, and model-agnostic AI. Your database credentials and row data never leave your machine; only your questions and schema metadata are sent to the model you pick.

Why this one?

• The Big Four in one studio. Native visual tooling for PostgreSQL (Supabase, Neon, AWS RDS), MySQL / MariaDB (PlanetScale, Aurora), SQLite (local .db files, Turso), and Redis / Valkey (Upstash, ElastiCache). No need to juggle four separate extensions.
• 60fps Zen virtualized data grid. Virtualized row rendering handles 100,000+ rows smoothly with zero editor lag. Double-click any cell to edit inline, review dirty states in subtle amber, and commit changes in a single atomic transaction.

• Production SafeGuard (Query Armor). Tag your production databases. The extension intercepts unindexed UPDATE or DELETE statements, runs an isolated dry-run transaction simulation (BEGIN ... ROLLBACK) on the server to count exact affected rows, and requires explicit confirmation before any destructive change executes.
• Data-to-code in 1 click. Right-click any table to copy strictly-typed TypeScript interfaces, runtime Zod validation schemas (z.object({...})), or Mermaid ERD relational diagrams ready for GitHub PRs.
• Bring your own AI model (⌘K). Connect any of the 350+ models on OpenRouter — Gemini 2.5 Flash, Claude 3.7 Sonnet, DeepSeek V3, GPT-4o. Type your intent in plain English, and the model writes schema-aware SQL. Pay per token, zero monthly subscriptions.

Setup

1. Install Database Studio from the VS Code Marketplace or Open VSX.
2. Open the Database Studio icon in your Activity Bar.
3. Click Add Connection (+) or let Auto-Detect discover your local .env database.
4. Click any table to open the visual Zen Data Grid.
5. (Optional for AI Copilot): Get an API key from openrouter.ai/keys and run Database Studio: Set OpenRouter API Key from the Command Palette (⌘ShiftP).

Configuration

Use it

1. Browse your schema: Expand any connection in the sidebar tree to see databases, schemas, tables, columns, indexes, and row counts.
2. Edit rows inline: Double-click any cell in the Zen Data Grid to edit. Dirty cells are highlighted in subtle amber. Hit Save Changes to commit in an atomic transaction, or Rollback to undo.
3. Ask AI (⌘K): Press ⌘K inside any query editor or table view. Type your request in plain English (e.g., "Find all users who signed up last week but haven't placed an order"). The model inspects your schema DDL and generates optimized SQL ready to run.
4. Generate code: Right-click any table in the sidebar and select Copy as TypeScript Interface, Copy as Zod Schema, or Copy as Mermaid ERD.
5. Inspect Redis: Expand Redis connections to view keys grouped by namespace hierarchy (cache:, session:). View live TTL countdowns and edit Hashes, Lists, and Sets visually.

FAQ

Does Database Studio track telemetry or send my database data anywhere?
No. Database Studio has zero telemetry, zero analytics trackers, and zero external network calls for its core database operations. When you use the optional AI Copilot (⌘K), only your plain English question and table schema DDL (table and column names) are sent to OpenRouter via your private API key. Your actual table row data stays 100% on your machine.

Why OpenRouter and not direct OpenAI / Anthropic keys?
One key, 350+ models, one bill, pay-per-token, zero subscriptions. You can use google/gemini-2.5-flash for fractions of a cent per query, or switch to anthropic/claude-3.7-sonnet or deepseek/deepseek-chat whenever a new model drops without changing extension configuration.

Does it work offline?
Yes. All database connections (PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite, Redis), schema browsing, table editing, filtering, and code generators work 100% offline. Only the optional AI Copilot feature requires an internet connection.

How does Production SafeGuard protect my database?
When a connection is marked with the Production tag, any query containing destructive statements (UPDATE, DELETE, DROP, TRUNCATE) is analyzed. If it lacks a restrictive WHERE clause, Database Studio wraps the query in a transaction (BEGIN ... ROLLBACK) on the server to count the exact rows affected, warns you with an explicit confirmation modal, and only executes if you approve.

What databases are supported?
PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, SQLite, and Redis / Valkey. Compatible with cloud providers including Supabase, Neon, PlanetScale, Turso, Upstash, AWS RDS, GCP Cloud SQL, and local Docker containers.
