Markdown Table GUI

Edit GFM Markdown tables in Visual Studio Code with an Excel-like grid. The Markdown source stays open on the left, the GUI opens on the right, and confirmed edits are written back immediately.

Install

Install Markdown Table GUI from Visual Studio Marketplace, or search the VS Code Extensions view for @id:RyutaC2.markdown-table-gui.

The extension supports VS Code Desktop, vscode.dev, and github.dev.

Use

Edit a table

  1. Open a Markdown file.
  2. Select Edit Table above the table. If CodeLens is disabled, right-click inside the table and select Edit Table.
  3. Edit cells in the grid on the right.
  4. Save the Markdown file normally with Ctrl/Cmd+S.

Confirmed changes update the source immediately and use VS Code's standard dirty state and Undo/Redo history. The GUI tab is reused when you open another table.

Opening the GUI and fitting column widths

Auto-fit keeps pipes aligned in the Markdown source, including inline syntax such as backticks and links. The GUI separately measures rendered text with the VS Code editor font, so hidden Markdown syntax does not create unnecessary visual space.

Insert a table

Right-click in the Markdown editor and choose one of these commands:

  • Quick Insert Markdown Table (2 × 2) creates a header and one data row with two columns.
  • Insert Markdown Table lets you choose 1–20 rows and 1–20 columns. The row count includes the header.

The new table opens in the GUI with its first cell ready to edit.

Supported content

  • GFM tables recognized by both GitHub and VS Code's built-in Markdown preview
  • Optional outer pipes, empty cells, column alignment, escaped pipes, and common inline Markdown
  • Sanitized inline Markdown rendering; raw HTML is not rendered
  • UTF-8 CSV and XLSX import/export for the complete open table
  • English and Japanese UI, VS Code themes, and keyboard/screen-reader operation

Opening a table does not rewrite it. Uneven body rows are normalized only after the first edit. Imported spreadsheet values are treated as strings; formulas, formatting, images, merged cells, and multiple output sheets are not preserved.

Limits

  • VS Code 1.125.0 or later
  • Performance target: up to 50 columns × 500 rows; larger tables remain editable
  • No filters, formulas, autofill, merged cells, or multiline cells
  • No telemetry
