Paper Trail: explore, search and clean up local AI session data

VS Marketplace version Open VSX version VS Code 1.100 or later Works offline, no telemetry

Paper Trail

Explore, search and clean up local AI session data. Paper Trail reads the sessions Claude Code keeps in ~/.claude/projects, which otherwise sit there with no way to look at them: it shows how much space each project and session takes, reads any session back as a conversation, searches all of them, and clears out what you no longer need. Claude Code is the source it reads today.

Paper Trail is a preview: it works on real folders, and its features may still change.

Selecting the size in the status bar opens the Overview; a click on the largest project in the treemap shows it in the Projects view, then the Stats and History tabs

Features

See where the space goes

The Overview shows the total, a treemap and a sortable list of projects by size, the biggest and oldest sessions, and everything else in Claude Code's folder (plugins, file history, shell snapshots and the rest) with their sizes. It also shows Claude Code's own cleanupPeriodDays and what it does.

The Overview tab: the total, a treemap of projects coloured from blue for the smallest to orange for the largest, and the list beneath it

Read any session like a conversation

Open a session to read it like a chat: your prompts, Claude's replies as Markdown, thinking folded away, each tool call as a compact row you can open to see its input and result, images inline, and subagents nested under the call that started them. The header has the folder, branch, models, dates, token counts and an estimated cost. Jump between your prompts with Alt+Up and Alt+Down, and find in the session with Ctrl+F. Sessions of hundreds of megabytes open quickly, and a running session follows along as it grows.

A session opened from the Projects view: a tool call and a subagent expanded, a jump to the next prompt twice, then find in the session stepping through matches

Search everything you ever said

Search all transcripts from the sidebar: your prompts, Claude's replies, or everything including tool calls and their results, with match case and regular expressions. Results stream in grouped by session; pick one to open the session at that point. Stop a search with Escape.

A search for backoff streams in matches grouped by session; a click on one opens the session at that reply

Clean up with a preview

Delete a session or a project from the Projects view, or clear out in bulk from the Clean up tab: sessions older than some days, larger than some size, or with no reply; projects whose folder no longer exists; and folders left behind by deleted sessions. The preview lists every file and folder that would go and the space it frees, and you can keep any of them. Everything goes to the trash by default. Running sessions are never deleted, and sessions changed in the last few minutes are asked about again.

The Clean up tab: two rules ticked fill the preview, one session is kept, and the rest move to the trash after a confirm

Stats and history

Tokens and estimated cost by project and by model, activity for the last 30 days, and every prompt you have typed, searchable, each opening its session at that prompt.

The Stats tab: estimated cost, tokens, activity by day for 30 days and the model mix

The History tab: every prompt, newest first, with its project

Projects at a glance

The Projects view lists each project by its real folder, with its size and session count, and each session by its title, date, size and message count. Sort by date, size or name, and filter by title, folder or session id. Running and recently active sessions are marked, and so are projects whose folder is gone. From a session you can resume it in a terminal with claude --resume, export it as Markdown, reveal its transcript, or copy its id.

The Projects view with one project open: a running session, a recently active project and two whose folder is gone

Requirements

  • VS Code 1.100 or later
  • Claude Code, which writes the transcripts. Paper Trail only reads its folder, and deletes from it only when you confirm

Install

Install from the Visual Studio Marketplace, or from Open VSX in VSCodium and other editors that use it. In the editor, search the Extensions view for Paper Trail, or run code --install-extension MancSoftware.paper-trail.

Quick start

  1. Open Paper Trail in the activity bar. The Projects view fills in as it reads your transcripts.
  2. Select the size in the status bar, or run Paper Trail: Open Overview, to see what takes the space.
  3. Open a session from the Projects view to read it.
  4. Try a search from the Search view, or the Clean up tab to see what you could clear out.

Settings

Setting Default Description
paperTrail.configDir "" Claude Code's config folder; empty uses CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR, then ~/.claude
paperTrail.deletePermanently false delete without moving to the OS trash
paperTrail.recentMinutes 5 minutes since a transcript changed for its session to count as recently active
paperTrail.trivialMessageCount 2 sessions with fewer prompts and replies than this count as trivial in Clean up
paperTrail.prices {} price overrides per model id, in dollars per million tokens (input, output, cacheWrite, cacheWrite1h, cacheRead)
paperTrail.showThinking false open thinking blocks by default in the session reader

Colours

Paper Trail's four accent colours can be changed in workbench.colorCustomizations, and themes can set them. Together they make the size scale of the treemap and bar list, from the smallest project to the largest:

Colour Used for
paperTrail.deep the smallest project
paperTrail.trail your prompts, the active tab, the activity bars in Stats and the second step of the scale
paperTrail.spark Claude's replies, tool activity and the third step of the scale
paperTrail.flame the largest project

Privacy

Paper Trail makes no network requests and sends no telemetry. It reads Claude Code's folder on your machine, keeps a small index of session details in VS Code's storage for this extension, and deletes only what you confirm. Its webviews have a content security policy that blocks every network request. Costs are estimated from token counts with a built-in price table, not fetched.

Support

Questions and bug reports go to the Q&A tab of the extension's Marketplace page.

Licence

Paper Trail is proprietary software, free to use; the terms are in the LICENSE file that comes with the extension. Third-party components and their licences are listed in its ThirdPartyNotices.txt.
