NASM x86-64 for VS Code

Writing assembly shouldn't mean fighting your editor. This extension gives you proper syntax highlighting, hover docs, diagnostics, formatting, and autocomplete for NASM — x86-64 and AArch64 — the kind of tooling you'd expect for any modern language.

What You Get

Colors that make sense. Instructions, registers, and labels each get their own token role, so your theme colors them consistently. Macros you define get treated like instructions, not random text. Your code looks the same whether you're using mov or your own print_string macro.

Hover over anything. Put your cursor on jne and see what it does. Hover over 0x1F3A and get the decimal and binary forms without opening a calculator. The extension knows the full NASM instruction set plus directives, registers, and preprocessor macros.

Diagnostics as you type. Wrong operand counts, type mismatches, memory-to-memory moves, obsolete instructions, plus NASM-style warnings like orphan labels and unterminated strings. Every check has its own severity setting, and one master switch turns them all off.

A real formatter. Format Document and Format Selection align labels, instructions, and comments the way hand-formatted assembly looks. Strings and comments are left alone.

Rename, references, and code lens. Rename a label and every use follows. Find All References works across open files, and code lenses show how often each label is used.

Inlay hints and more. Inline hints show the computed value of your EQU constants, folding for macro and struc blocks, quick fixes for diagnostics, clickable %include paths, and signature help for macros.

AArch64 too. Switch the target architecture with the "NASM: Toggle Architecture" command (or click the indicator in the status bar) and the whole toolchain — highlighting, hover, completion, diagnostics — follows.

Cross-file awareness. Labels and macros from any open assembly tab show up in autocomplete. Define my_function in one file, use it in another — the editor knows.

Local labels work properly. NASM's .local_label syntax is fully supported. Type . and see suggestions for labels in the current scope.

Supports all NASM number formats: 0x, $, h suffix, 0b, b suffix, octal (0o/0q/q suffix), plain decimals, and _ digit separators.
