Type the Change

Codex explores. You learn by making the change.

Ask about your project. A background Codex agent finds relevant code and explains the behavior. Open a suggestion to reach the exact lines, edit them yourself, run a check, and decide whether to keep the result.

Install · 한국어

Start

  1. Open a project folder in VS Code.
  2. Choose Type the Change in the activity bar, or press Cmd/Ctrl+Alt+T.
  3. Describe a question or change and choose Send. You do not need to select files first.
  4. Choose Explore the change, edit the selected source, and use Save & check.

The extension uses an installed Codex engine and its existing account. Choose Connect Codex if sign-in is needed. Codex app-server owns models, project exploration, tools, conversation history, and streaming. Explanations and progress stay inside Type the Change. The Codex desktop app or official IDE extension does not need to open.

Questions receive explanations first. Learn through this change requests a small practical step from the discussion. Matching the suggested text or passing a check never automatically accepts a change.

Settings

  • Settings & tools → Language: follow VS Code, Korean, or English.
  • Model selection is optional; the Codex catalog's default is used.
  • Choose Codex executable supplies a path when automatic detection fails. The macOS desktop app's bundled runtime and Codex on PATH are detected automatically.
  • Optional reference files, imported suggestions, and an offline editing/checking exercise are under Settings & tools.

Preview · VS Code 1.100+ · Local projects · Installed Codex required. Background Codex runs read-only. Learning suggestions support existing UTF-8 source files up to 64 KiB each. People make the edits and choose which checks to run.

Codex

English

  2. 왼쪽 Type the Change 아이콘이나 ⌘⌥T / Ctrl+Alt+T를 누르세요.

Guide

Open a project and choose Type the Change in the activity bar. Ask about the code or describe a task without selecting files first. Codex explores the project in the background and explains relevant locations.

Connect and ask

An existing Codex account is reused. If needed, choose Connect Codex, finish the managed browser sign-in, and return here. Codex owns account refresh and inference. The conversation remains inside Type the Change; opening another app or the official IDE extension is optional.

Text and activity appear incrementally. Stop or Escape interrupts the background task and preserves received text. Errors appear beside the request. New chat resets conversation and learning state while preserving your source edits.

Learn through a change

  1. Request a change, or choose Learn through this change after an explanation.
  2. Explore the change opens the real source and selects its exact location.
  3. Read the suggestion and rationale, then edit the code yourself. Alternative implementations are allowed.
  4. Choose Save & check, selecting an existing VS Code task.
  5. Compare the result and diff, record your evidence, and keep, reject or defer the change.

The first check picker explains setting task.saveBeforeRun to never in the applicable scope. Only reviewed files are then saved by the explicit check action. Cancel and Compare only leave the preference unchanged. Neither text agreement nor a passing check proves correctness or understanding.

Learning proposals support existing UTF-8 files up to 64 KiB each. If the source changes before the suggestion is opened, request a fresh proposal. Codex exploration is not restricted to the active editor file.

Settings and recovery

Settings & tools contains language selection (automatic, Korean or English), optional references, an offline exercise, and imported suggestions. The Codex catalog's default model is used unless you choose another.

If Codex cannot be found, choose its executable or set the absolute typeTheChange.codexPath. Update Codex if its protocol cannot connect. On macOS the desktop app's bundled runtime is detected automatically. View task in Codex is an optional deep link; it is not the main learning flow.

To revoke the separate OAuth connection from an older extension version, run Type the Change: Disconnect Legacy ChatGPT Connection. This does not sign out Codex.

MCP

The existing optional MCP workflow remains available. MCP setup shows a configuration using the bundled local server and the current workspace. It handles local proposals/status, not inference. Use Open MCP suggestion to start learning from an arriving plan. See Privacy.

MCP

Privacy and local data

Type the Change has no application backend, analytics, advertising, or telemetry of its own.

Codex connection (0.6.0)

The extension launches an installed Codex app-server over local stdin/stdout. Codex owns sign-in, token storage and renewal, model selection, project exploration, tool execution, and provider requests under the account and configuration selected in Codex. The extension does not read Codex credential files or receive its tokens. It reads account availability through the app-server protocol, without displaying or logging account identity. Requests and project context inspected by Codex are subject to Codex's account, service, and data settings. Codex may persist local conversation history in its own storage.

The background learning thread uses Codex's read-only filesystem policy and declines requests to expand permissions or apply source changes. Codex sends small learning proposals through a local dynamic tool. The extension validates exact source anchors against current editor buffers and keeps the proposal in memory until the user opens it. Codex's project and instruction handling is distinct from the optional MCP server's narrower path rules below; source files may contain private data.

The extension holds the current conversation and pending suggestion in memory. The input draft stays in VS Code webview state. The selected model, language, optional Codex executable path, and check-task preference are stored using VS Code configuration/state. Optional reference-file selection reads filenames and performs a bounded search; it does not transmit source merely because a file is selected.

Versions 0.2–0.5 used an independent ChatGPT OAuth connection in VS Code SecretStorage. Those credentials are no longer used for generation. The legacy disconnect command remains available to revoke that connection and clear its local tokens; it does not sign out the shared Codex account. No credentials are migrated or copied into Codex. The old local account lock contains process metadata only.

Local files and MCP

The extension reads files needed for a plan and compares editor buffers. It never applies a proposed source change. The explicit Save and Check action saves the current editor contents of files in the review; unrelated dirty files are not saved. Comparison without a check does not save anything. Demo files are created in a temporary directory.

The optional MCP server can read bounded source files under the one workspace path you configure. The connected client chooses which files to request, so connect only a client you trust with that workspace. Its own data handling and model provider also apply. The server rejects path traversal, symlinks, protected credential paths, oversized files, and non-UTF-8 input. These checks do not guarantee that ordinary source files contain no secrets; choose the workspace accordingly.

The server writes code-containing plans to .type-the-change/plan.json. The extension writes dated progress metadata to .type-the-change/status.json. In 0.3.0 it also writes .type-the-change/review.json: the current session’s last 100 decision records, with your prediction, evidence, decision, step/file, buffer hash, and time. A new session replaces that journal when its first decision is recorded. Notes are not automatically sent to a model and are not included in MCP status responses. They may contain whatever private information you type; the directory should stay out of source control. A decision remains human-reported evidence. From 0.4.0, the journal may also contain separate task evidence: the selected task name, source hash, status, exit code, duration, and up to five bounded diagnostic messages. These are not sent to a model. The last chosen task fingerprint is stored in VS Code workspace state. The first check picker explicitly describes setting task.saveBeforeRun to never before it applies that workspace preference (or the user preference if no folder is open). This also affects other VS Code tasks in that scope; cancel and compare-only choices leave the preference unchanged. The extension runs a selected existing VS Code task only after an explicit action; the bundled demo has its own local check. A task can itself read files, run dependencies or use the network according to its project configuration. The extension does not capture the full terminal output or interpret an exit code as proof of correctness. These files are local, have restrictive permissions where supported, and can be removed when no session is active. Add .type-the-change/ to the project's Git ignore rules. The MCP server has no source-editing, shell execution, or direct model-inference tools.

Your VS Code autosave, backups, synchronization, other extensions, and normal save behavior remain under your control. The extension does not upload plan history to a separate service.

Verification

Version 0.6.0 passed 206 automated tests, 558 headless layout cases, and native VS Code editing/checking tests. A separate live Codex turn in a temporary read-only project streamed explanations and produced one validated learning step without changing its source. This is not a large-project performance benchmark or a complete live-account UI test.
