Kaplan Dark is a warm, yellow-accented theme for Visual Studio Code. Dark gray backgrounds, Kaplan yellow (#ffc640) UI accents and a calm, high-contrast syntax palette that keeps your code easy to read for hours. It comes in four variants: Dark, Muted, true-black OLED and Light.

Variants

Theme Description
Kaplan Dark The original: dark gray background with vibrant yellow (#ffc640) accents throughout the UI.
Kaplan Dark Muted Same syntax colors, but neutral gray UI chrome so only your code is in color.
Kaplan OLED True black (#000000) background, perfect for OLED/AMOLED displays and dark rooms, with warm near-black popups.
Kaplan Light Warm paper background with amber syntax and the same yellow buttons, badges and selections.

Features

  • Clean, warm syntax palette: gold keywords, lemon types, orange functions, mint strings, steel-blue constants on soft parchment text — with quiet punctuation so the code structure stands out.
  • Readable comments (warm gray, WCAG ≥ 3.7:1) that stay out of the way.
  • Themed bracket pair colorization, inlay hints, sticky scroll, diff/merge editor, terminal ANSI colors, testing and debug UI.
  • Semantic highlighting that matches TextMate colors exactly, so code looks the same before and after the language server loads. Deprecated symbols are struck through.

Recommended settings

Feedback and Contributions

Your feedback is highly appreciated! If you encounter any issues or have suggestions for improvement, please feel free to open an issue here.

Contributions are also welcome! If you would like to contribute to the theme by adding new features or improving existing ones, please submit a pull request.

Development

All four themes are generated — don't edit themes/*.json by hand.

  • Workbench (UI) colors and the syntax palette live in scripts/build.mjs.
  • Syntax token scopes live in src/token-colors.json and reference palette colors as $name.

Run npm run build to regenerate the themes, then press F5 to try them in an Extension Development Host.
