MadeCoders for VS Code
Turn your own commits into professional evidence on MadeCoders — without changing your Git workflow.
MadeCoders records the engineering work you actually do: which technologies and concepts each commit exercised, when, and how much. This extension brings that into VS Code. You keep committing as usual; the evidence shows up in the side bar and on your MadeCoders page.
The extension is free and requires a free MadeCoders account.
What it does
>_ MadeCoders panel in the Activity Bar — sign in, then follow three tabs: Summary (today, latest evidence, recent commits, AI, sync), Evidence and History (your work sessions, placed on the date the work was done).
- Smart Commit in Source Control — writes the commit message with the AI tool you already use and fills the native commit input. It never commits or pushes: you do.
- Commit evidence — every commit of yours (Source Control, Commit & Push, terminal, any tool) is analyzed in the background and synced as structured data. Works with the panel closed and offline (local queue).
- Commit history, on request — when you open a repository the extension tells you how many of your commits were not analyzed yet. Analysis only starts when you ask, runs in batches, and can be paused, cancelled and resumed.
- Status bar — connected, analyzing, syncing, offline or needs attention.
It is not a project manager: no boards, tasks, sprints, issues or pull requests.
Getting started
- Install the extension and open the
>_ MadeCoders panel in the Activity Bar.
- Sign in with your MadeCoders email and password (create a free account).
- Open a folder with a Git repository and confirm your Git identity when asked. Only commits from your confirmed identities are recorded.
- Commit as usual.
Requires VS Code 1.90 or newer and Git. Works with GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Azure DevOps, private and local repositories, multi-root workspaces, monorepos, worktrees and submodules. The extension only reads Git.
AI is optional — and it is yours
MadeCoders does not include, resell or proxy any AI. If you want AI-written commit messages and richer analysis, the extension can run an AI tool you installed and signed in to yourself, as a local process:
| Tool |
Command |
| Claude Code |
claude |
| OpenAI Codex CLI |
codex |
| GitHub Copilot CLI |
copilot |
| Gemini CLI |
gemini |
| Junie CLI |
junie |
| Ollama |
local server (http://localhost:11434) |
- You are asked first. Before the context of a commit is handed to an AI tool for the first time, the extension tells you what it is about to do and waits for your permission. Until then, analysis is deterministic.
- No API keys, no credentials. The extension never asks for a key or token and never reads those tools' credentials or configuration. Sign-in belongs to each tool.
- Least privilege. Tools run in an empty temporary directory, with a time limit, and without flags that widen their permissions.
- Your account, your plan. Usage, quotas, rate limits and your organization's policies are those of the tool you chose. If the tool refuses, the extension shows the error and falls back to deterministic analysis.
- Without any AI tool, everything still works with deterministic analysis.
Privacy
- MadeCoders never receives your code. It receives counts (files, lines, tests), short hashes of paths, languages, technology and concept names, a title and a summary.
- The context is built and sanitized on your machine. Secrets and personal data (keys, tokens, passwords, private keys, emails, phone and document numbers) are removed before any text leaves it; credential files are skipped entirely.
- When you use an AI tool, the sanitized context is handed to that tool. What the tool sends to its own vendor is controlled by the tool and follows the vendor's policies. With Ollama and a local model, processing can stay entirely on your machine.
- By default the title and summary describe the engineering capability, not your business: repository names, branch names and the original commit message are not sent as written.
- In an untrusted workspace the extension does not read Git or run AI tools.

Settings and commands
MadeCoders: Settings opens six pages — General, AI, Git, Privacy, Sync and Advanced. The same options are available under Settings → Extensions → MadeCoders; all of them are machine-scoped (not synced, not overridable by a workspace).
Commands (prefix MadeCoders:): Open, Smart Commit, Show Summary, Show Evidence, Show History, Sync Now, Analyze Commit History, Reanalyze Entire History…, Select AI, Settings, Account, Open in MadeCoders, Check Connection, Open Log, Sign Out.
The panel, the notifications and the settings pages follow the language of your MadeCoders account (Portuguese or English).
