VibeCode for VS Code

VibeCode is a coding agent that reads and writes files, runs commands, searches the web, uses subagents and workflows, and asks for permission before doing anything risky. This extension runs the same VibeCode app as the desktop version, inside VS Code.

Where to find it

  • Side view — click the VibeCode icon in the Activity Bar.
  • Editor tab — click the VibeCode medallion in the editor title bar (next to the other AI tools), or run VibeCode: Open from the Command Palette.

Both show the same chat panel, in the style of Claude Code: the session title with history and new session at the top, the conversation as a timeline, and the input box at the bottom. Type / in the box for skills and built-in commands, or click the / button for actions: attach a file, mention a project file, rewind, export the conversation, compact the context, switch model and reasoning level, and open Settings, Capabilities, Preview, and Workflow. Cmd+Esc (macOS) or Ctrl+Esc puts the cursor in the VibeCode input from anywhere.

Sessions and folders

A session runs in the folder open in the VS Code window, like Claude Code. With no folder open, VibeCode asks you to open one first. History lists only the sessions of this folder, with archived sessions grouped at the bottom. Sessions are stored locally.

Clicking a file path in the conversation, or an agent pointing at lines of a file, opens that file in the VS Code editor (with the lines selected) in the editor column next to the chat tab. Files the agent opens do not take the cursor away from the input box. Only files inside the workspace folder open in the editor; other paths, and documents such as PDF or Office files, are shown in Finder or Explorer.

What works like the desktop app

The agent itself: models through your account, your own OpenRouter keys, or a local/custom endpoint; tools and permission modes; subagents and workflows; skills, memory, and MCP servers; plan mode; the preview with Live Edit comments; screenshots and page interaction; PDF and document tools.

Differences from the desktop app

  • No sidebar or right panel. The desktop app's session sidebar and right panel (changes review, file tree and editor, terminal, context and memory tabs) are not part of the chat panel: VS Code's own editor, terminal, and source control do those jobs, and the agent's edits still show as diffs in the conversation.
  • Sessions are separate. The extension keeps its own session history. To bring your desktop sessions over, run VibeCode: Import sessions from the desktop app (the desktop app is not changed). Keys and sign-in are stored encrypted per app, so sign in and add keys again in the extension.
  • Browser. Preview, screenshots, and PDFs use a Chromium-based browser already on your machine (Chrome, Edge, Chromium, or Brave). If none is found, VibeCode offers to download Chrome for Testing (about 150 MB). The download runs in the background: a screenshot or preview requested before it finishes fails right away and says why, so try again when it is done. If you decline, VibeCode does not ask again for 10 minutes. You can set a path in the vibecode.pathPeramban setting.
  • Preview in a window. The preview is shown inside VS Code. Open in window (on the preview, or VibeCode: Open preview in a separate window) moves it to its own browser window; close that window to bring it back.
  • One preview at a time. With several VS Code windows open, the preview shows in the window that opened it last.
  • Zoom. The interface follows the VS Code zoom (Ctrl/Cmd + and -).
  • Updates come from VS Code, not from the app.

Background host

VibeCode runs one background process per VS Code installation, shared by all windows. It keeps running agents alive when a window closes and stops by itself after 10 minutes with no windows, no running work, no background processes, and no open terminals. VibeCode: Restart background host restarts it; VibeCode: Show log opens its log.

Data lives in ~/.vibecode/vscode/<variant>/. The rest of ~/.vibecode (skills, memory, settings) is shared with the desktop app.

Requirements

VS Code 1.90 or newer on macOS, Windows 10/11, or Linux.

Cmd+Esc / Ctrl+Esc memfokuskan kolom ketik. Riwayat sesi terpisah dari aplikasi desktop; impor lewat perintah VibeCode: Import sessions from the desktop app.
