Your own API keys and local models work without an Uptokey account. The Uptokey account menu connects the account used across Uptokey apps; local device approval and access to your workspace remain separate. Eligible Free models appear in the same model selector when your connected Uptokey service supports hosted requests and your account is signed in. Connected local and BYOK models stay first. Usage shows hosted request records and lets you check a receipt without resending the prompt. Older services keep local and BYOK access. In the editor
Models, provider keys, routing, conversation storage, and execution remain owned by the Uptokey service. This extension does not bundle another model runtime. Secrets are entered in that local flow and kept in the Uptokey vault. Shortcuts

Existing setting and command identifiers are retained. Updates under the same publisher retain the extension's storage scope. If you installed the earlier local package from Privacy and accessOnly code you select or attach is included as context. Sensitive files such as The chat view cannot read secrets, contact providers, or execute commands. Those operations go through the extension host and the local service. The extension stores its device credential in VS Code SecretStorage; provider keys stay in the Uptokey vault. Disconnect VS Code revokes this client's access. It does not remove your provider keys or the conversations stored by Uptokey. Requires VS Code 1.96 or later. Local operations require a trusted local workspace. Local connection and account operations are disabled in remote windows (SSH, WSL, containers, or Codespaces). Open a trusted local window to use them.
