Tsedal AI, the AI coding agent for VS Code

tsedalai.com · Docs · Terms and privacy

Tsedal AI is an AI coding agent that works inside VS Code. Describe a task in plain words and Tsedal reads your project, edits and creates files, runs your tests, and keeps going until the job is done. You review every change before it is saved.

It also answers questions about your code, edits a selection in place, fixes errors from the lightbulb, writes commit messages, completes code as you type, and runs tasks on a schedule.

Getting started

  1. Install Tsedal AI from the Marketplace.
  2. Open the Tsedal panel by clicking the Tsedal icon in the activity bar, or press Cmd+L (Ctrl+L on Windows and Linux).
  3. Sign in. Click Sign in and paste your API key. Keys start with eck_ and are stored in your system keychain.
  4. Open a project folder and tell Tsedal what to build or fix.

You need a Tsedal account to use the extension. Get your API key at tsedalai.com, and see the Docs for more.

Agent: hand off a whole task

Tsedal plans a task, reads the code, proposes a change and saves it after the user accepts

Type what you want, for example "Add drag-and-drop reordering to the todo list and save the order". Tsedal:

  • makes a short plan and ticks it off as it works;
  • reads the files it needs and searches your project;
  • proposes changes as diffs, which you Accept, Reject, or open side by side;
  • runs commands such as your tests, only after you click Run;
  • keeps going until the task is finished, then tells you what changed.

Every change can be undone, one at a time or all at once from the files changed bar. A whole task counts as one request against your allowance, however many steps it takes.

Ask: questions about your code

Tsedal explains why a list flickers, with a code example

Switch the box to Ask for answers without changes to your files. The open file or your selection goes with the question automatically. Every code block in an answer has Copy and Insert, and file names in answers open the file when clicked.

Type / for quick commands: /explain, /fix, /tests and /doc.

Edit in place

The user selects a function, asks to trim the title, and accepts the highlighted change

Select code, press Cmd+I (Ctrl+I), and describe the change. The new code is highlighted in the editor. Press Cmd+Enter to accept or Cmd+Backspace to reject.

On any error or warning, click the lightbulb and choose Fix with Tsedal.

Add context: files, screenshots and PDFs

A screenshot, the Problems list and the current file attached to a message, with file search open

Give Tsedal what it needs to see:

  • Type # to find and attach a file from your project.
  • Click the paperclip to add files, folders, open editors, the Problems list, your Git changes or clipboard text.
  • Paste a screenshot, or drag in images and PDFs.
  • Right-click a file in the Explorer and choose Add to Tsedal Chat.

Choose a model

The model menu with Auto, Fast, Smart and Max and how many requests are left on each

Model Best for
Auto Most work. Uses Fast, and moves hard questions up to Smart.
Fast Everyday questions and edits.
Smart Harder problems and bigger changes.
Max The strongest model, for the hardest problems.

The status bar always shows what you have left today, for example Fast 12/15 · Smart 3/4. Click it for this week and month, and when each limit resets.

Autocomplete

A grey suggestion for the body of a new function, with Accept Tab

As you type, Tsedal suggests the next lines in grey, written for the code before and after your cursor. Press Tab to accept, or keep typing to ignore it. Turn suggestions off or on with Tsedal: Toggle Autocomplete.

Scheduled tasks

The list of scheduled tasks with their times and next runs

Let Tsedal do routine work on a timetable, for example "Update dependencies and summarise any breaking changes" every weekday at 08:00.

  • In VS Code: runs as an agent task in your project when it is open. You review the changes as usual.
  • On the server: answers only, without access to your code, and runs even when VS Code is closed.

Open Tsedal: Scheduled Tasks from the Command Palette, or click the clock button in the chat title bar.

More

  • Commit messages: click the sparkle in Source Control to write one from your changes.
  • History: earlier chats are under the history button in the chat title bar.
  • API keys: create and revoke keys with Tsedal: Manage API Keys.

Safety

  • The agent only works inside the folder you have open.
  • Secret files such as .env, private keys and certificates are never read or changed.
  • Every file change waits for your review, and every applied change can be undone.
  • Commands run only after you approve them.

Privacy

Your prompts and code are sent to the Tsedal server, which passes them to AI providers to answer you. The server does not store prompts, code or answers. Images and PDFs you attach are kept on the server for 30 days so later steps of a task can use them; scheduled task prompts are kept with the schedule until you delete it. The terms and privacy page lists the AI providers used.

Troubleshooting

"This API key is not valid." Check that you pasted the whole key, starting with eck_. Run Tsedal: Sign In to enter it again, or create a new key at tsedalai.com.

"You have used all … requests for today." The message says when your limit resets. You can continue on another model that still has requests left.

"This agent task reached its step limit." Review what Tsedal changed, then click Start a new task to carry on.

A model shows "Not available right now". Choose another model; it comes back automatically.
