Markish for VS Code
Edit Markdown in VS Code the way it looks when rendered. Markish opens .md files in a WYSIWYG visual editor that stays in sync with the Markdown source in real time, and you can edit on either side.
Try the editor in your browser → No install needed.
Requires the Markish desktop app. This extension is a companion to Markish for macOS and Windows. Authorize it once from the app, and it works during the app's free 30-day trial and after purchase. See Getting started.
Features
- Visual, source, or both. Switch between the WYSIWYG visual editor, the Markdown source, and a side-by-side split view. Changes on one side appear on the other instantly. Neither side is a read-only preview.
- Just type Markdown. Type
## for a heading or - for a list. You can also format text from the toolbar or with keyboard shortcuts.
- Tables made easy. Type straight into the cells. Add, delete and reorder rows and columns, and set each column's alignment.
- Code, diagrams and math. Code blocks are highlighted for each language. Click a Mermaid diagram or LaTeX math to edit it with a live preview.
- Long documents. Jump to any heading from the outline. Find and replace supports regular expressions.
- Footnotes and front matter. Footnotes are numbered and renumbered automatically. YAML front matter is edited as a table of keys and values.
- Images. Local images are displayed. Paste an image from the clipboard, or insert one from a file, and it's saved in the same folder as your document.
- Feels like VS Code. Follows your color theme (light or dark), editor font size and display language. Saving, the dirty indicator and undo work as usual.
- Themes. Choose the visual editor's theme separately for VS Code's light and dark color themes.
Your files stay plain .md files. Nothing is sent anywhere, and after authorization the extension works without the app running and without a network connection.
Getting started
- Get the desktop app. Markish is available on the Mac App Store and the Microsoft Store.
- Open any
.md file in VS Code and click Authorize.
- Approve in the desktop app. Markish opens and asks you to confirm. Once approved, you're done.
If the desktop app can't be launched from your environment (for example, over Remote SSH), click Desktop app not opening? and paste the code shown under VS Code integration in the app's settings.
Opening files as plain text
Markish becomes the default editor for .md files. If you'd rather use VS Code's text editor:
- Just this file: click Open in text editor on the authorization screen, or run View: Reopen Editor With… and choose Text Editor.
- Always: click Always open .md files as text on the authorization screen, or run Markish: Open .md files with the text editor by default.
- Switch back to Markish: run Markish: Open .md files with Markish by default. Or click the book icon at the top right of a Markdown file and choose Use Markish when asked.
Files that are already open switch over right away.
New, unsaved files
- File > New File… > Markdown File creates an unsaved Markdown file and opens it in Markish.
- For a file you created another way, set its language mode to Markdown, then click the book icon at the top right.
Images are saved in the same folder as the document, so save the file before adding images.
