Astral Foundry — Space Themes & Icons

50 original space-inspired color themes, 50 matching file icon packs, and a dedicated developer workspace for Visual Studio Code. Made by ToxicEpoch.

From the warm umber of Martian Alloy to Europa Signal's layered teal, each world has its own editor surfaces, syntax, emblem, document frames and folder treatments. Nebula Loom leads the collection with woven starlight, plum and luminous cyan.

Install and choose a pair

Download astral-foundry-1.0.0.vsix from a release, or build it with the instructions below.
In VS Code, run Extensions: Install from VSIX… and select the file.
Run Astral Foundry: Choose Theme + Icons from the Command Palette.
Navigate to preview each theme and its matching icons. Enter keeps the pair; Escape or dismissal restores the previous settings.

Installation, activation and opening the workspace preserve your appearance. Nothing is selected automatically. Themes and icons also appear separately in VS Code's standard Color Theme and File Icon Theme pickers. The extension identifier is toxicepoch.astral-foundry; this repository prepares release files and does not imply that a Marketplace listing is published.

The paired picker shows whether changes target User settings or Workspace settings. If either appearance setting already has a Workspace override, the pair uses that scope; otherwise it uses User settings. Cancellation restores explicit File Icon Theme: None, removes overrides that did not exist before preview, and respects newer external setting changes. Write or rollback failures display an error with recovery guidance.

Your developer workspace

Open the Astral Foundry Activity Bar entry or run Astral Foundry: Open Workspace. The view shows the active emblem, appearance, paired-icon status, theme picker, searchable collection, project opener, recent workspaces, terminal and existing task shortcuts, and configurable project links.

Move the view to the Secondary Side Bar using VS Code's view context menu if desired. VS Code remembers placement. Open Workspace focuses astralFoundry.home.focus; it does not relocate views or reset your layout.

The gallery uses actual bundled SVGs and palette data. Applying a card updates the pair immediately; the picker is the preview-and-cancel workflow.

Defaults are empty. Empty links open their setting. Only HTTPS URLs without embedded credentials are accepted, and links open only after your action.

The 50 worlds

All 50 backgrounds are distinct. Dark and medium-dark surfaces span warm solar, mineral, aquatic, forest, violet, neutral and pearlescent directions. These are artistic interpretations, not measured astronomical colors.

The complete palette and artwork guide records AF01–AF50, all 250 seeds, role assignments, surface hex values, derivations and emblem/icon briefs. Six exact palettes and artwork directions were reviewed before implementation; the remaining 44 follow the approved collection matrix. Seeds stay separate from derived colors.

Matching icons

Generated production SVGs rendered at 16px and 24px in a browser inspection sheet. The enlarged emblems and the compact Explorer root icons use distinct optical treatments.

Each pack contains 94 SVGs, for 4,700 theme SVGs total. Collection branding is separate. Every pack includes identical mappings for 173 extensions, 85 special filenames, 50 language IDs, 56 named folders and their 56 expanded variants, plus unknown file, default folder, expanded folder and root states. Technology glyphs remain recognizable while each theme has individual framing and folder artwork.

Compatibility, trust and privacy

VS Code desktop 1.85.0 or newer, using the desktop UI extension host (extensionKind: ["ui"]). Desktop remote and virtual workspaces retain the reference behavior. The dedicated workspace/picker does not claim browser-only vscode.dev support.
Themes, icons and browsing work in Restricted Mode. Terminal and task shortcuts require workspace trust and invoke your existing VS Code tasks; no project task definitions are added.
Artwork stays in bundled SVGs and the extension's own webviews. Native editor surfaces are opaque theme tokens. No CSS injection, installation patches, wallpapers or animated native chrome.
No runtime npm dependencies, telemetry, analytics or background network requests from this extension. Webviews use restrictive CSP, escaped content, local resource roots and allowlisted messages.

Verification and development

The current collection passes the 4.5:1 threshold for all checked text/surface categories; the minimum recorded value is 4.77:1. Checks cover syntax, active lines, comments, sidebar text, selections, buttons, tabs, title/status, hover/search, terminal ANSI, diagnostics and meaningful drawing inks. Use Node.js 24 and Python 3.12 for the CI environment. Packaging runs build and unit/asset validation itself. DEVELOPMENT.md, CONTRIBUTING.md and RELEASE.md explain the deterministic pipeline, native matrix and explicit archive inventories.

The local verification ran on Windows with VS Code 1.85.0 and 1.138.0. Native picker input was scripted against the real Extension Host; it was not a manual keyboard/mouse acceptance test. The Windows/Linux CI matrix is configured; no remote CI execution is claimed by these local results.

MIT. Astral Foundry retains the Chroma Reactor runtime/build architecture and inherited Toxic Spectrum vocabulary under their MIT attribution; Astral Foundry palette data, emblems, frames, folder treatments and branding are original. See THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.md.
