GCode Viewer

A VS Code extension for 3D printing: preview sliced GCode toolpaths and print-ready 3D models without leaving the editor.

Open a .gcode file from your slicer (Bambu, Orca, Cura, Prusa, and similar) to inspect layers, extrusion vs travel, and print progress. Open STL / STEP / glTF and other meshes to check the part before slicing. You can also try interactive examples in the browser: gcode.thingraph.site.

Features

GCode preview

  • Open sliced .gcode in a custom read-only editor.
  • Orbit, pan, and zoom the toolpath in 3D, with a print bed / build-volume plate when the file provides it.
  • Scrub layers (Z height) and steps (line / vertex window) to see how the print builds up.
  • Use the legend to distinguish features such as perimeters, infill, support, travel, and wipe.
  • Open the GCode panel to inspect the source commands alongside the 3D view.
  • Color the path by feature type or other print attributes (for example speed) where the file includes them.
  • Take a screenshot of the current view.

Print-ready 3D models

  • Open common mesh and CAD formats used in 3D printing (STL, 3MF, STEP, glTF, and more).
  • Inspect the solid with pan, zoom, orbit, view cube, and screenshot.

The viewer runs inside a VS Code webview. Chrome follows the editor so the preview fits VS Code and Cursor.

Supported Formats

Sliced toolpaths:

  • GCode (.gcode)

Print-ready 3D models:

  • STL
  • 3MF
  • glTF / GLB
  • OBJ
  • FBX
  • PLY
  • DAE
  • STP / STEP
  • IGS / IGES

Usage

  1. Open a .gcode file from your slicer, or a print-ready model such as STL or STEP.
  2. The extension opens it with the GCode Viewer custom editor.
  3. For GCode, use the layer bar, step bar, legend, and GCode panel to inspect the print. For meshes, orbit the model as usual.

If another editor takes the file, right-click it and choose Open With… → GCode Viewer.

Notes

  • The editor is read-only; it does not send jobs to a printer or rewrite GCode.
  • Large slicer dumps may take longer to load depending on file size and machine performance.

Privacy

GCode and 3D model files are processed locally; file content is not uploaded to Thingraph servers.

The extension may send anonymous usage statistics (e.g. file format, load success/failure, and extension version) to Umami. File names, paths, and file content are not included. See PRIVACY.md for details.
