Developer Farm
A cozy little world of your own.
A single-player pixel-art farming and exploration game that lives in an editor tab of VS Code. Till your field, plant, water,
sleep, and pick what grew; sell it, get to know the people of the valley, and raise a few hens. It is early: this is version 0.8,
sound and polish. The farm, the village with its shop and cottages, the river and the wood, seven villagers, a coop, fishing, an old mine, cooking and a workbench, furniture, a greenhouse, buried artifacts, a museum,
seventeen quests, weather, four festivals, a notice board, a Sunday market, two more regions (Windcrest Heights and Marlow Marsh), rare creatures to befriend, sprinklers, fertilizer and a flower that grows only in the rain are in; sound that follows the weather and the hour, text size, contrast and calm-motion options, and a balance pass are the last of the roadmap's eight phases.
Offline, private, yours. No account, no internet, no multiplayer, no telemetry, and it never looks at your code or your
editor. Your farm is saved as plain files on your computer.
Playing
- Click the farm icon in the Activity Bar, then Open Developer Farm (or run Developer Farm: Open Farm from the Command Palette).
- Move with
WASD or the arrow keys, hold Shift to run. Pick an item with 1–0, Q / R or the wheel.
Space (or a click) uses the item on the cell in front of you: the hoe tills the fenced field, seeds plant in tilled
soil, the watering can waters it (refill it at the pond, the river or the well).
E picks a ripe crop and uses what you face: read signs, talk to a villager, pet a hen, ship crops in the bin, fill the
coop's trough, or go to bed at the farmhouse door. Crops grow overnight, but only if you watered them.
- Willa minds the seed stall from about half past eight until five. Talk to her to buy seeds, feed and chickens, or to sell what
you grew. The east road leads to the Village Green, where Tobias lives and Hollis keeps the general store (walk into a door to go
in). Give people things they like (select the item, talk to them, Give); they remember.
- Buy a fishing rod and a pickaxe from Hollis. With the rod selected,
Space casts at open water: press when the float dips,
then again when the marker is in the green. The pickaxe breaks rocks in the old mine, past the pond in Whispering Wood.
- Walk into your own door: the kitchen cooks, the workbench makes, the bed ends the day. Buy furniture from Hollis and place it with
Space. Swing the hoe at a
mound of fresh earth to dig up an artifact, and show the finds to Ines at the museum.
J opens the journal (quests and what they pay, your collection of fish, minerals and artifacts, and a calendar of festivals and birthdays). Read the notice board on the green for the day's requests, and look for the merchant on Sundays. Esc opens the menu (save, zoom, hints, sound, and comfort options: text size, contrast, motion). + / − zoom, H hides the
interface.
The day runs from 6:00 am to 2:00 am. The game saves by itself every 30 seconds, at the end of every day, and whenever you leave
the window. It pauses when you do.
