Tern

Your team's plan, connected to the code.

Features

Tern reads your codebase and builds a structured inventory of what needs attention: the actual files, classified by pattern, grouped by owner. A spreadsheet you can filter, sort, and share with your team. This extension puts that inventory in your editor.

Sidebar. Every effort your team is tracking in Tern shows up in the VS Code sidebar. Open one up. You see the groups, the files, the classifications. Click a file and you're looking at the code. The plan and the code are in the same window.

Walkthroughs. Tern can walk you through the most important groups in an effort, surfacing what's interesting so you can orient quickly.

Getting started

  1. Sign up at tern.sh and connect a repo.
  2. Describe what you want to understand: "find every direct database call", "show me all uses of the old auth pattern", "which components still use the v1 API."
  3. Install the extension. Your efforts show up in the sidebar.

That's it. The spreadsheet lives at app.tern.sh. The code lives here.
