Tartanak Agent for VS Code

Your organization’s coding agent, available beside your project.

Ask questions, edit files, run commands, test changes, and follow every step without leaving VS Code.

Work with your project, not around it

Tartanak Agent gives eligible Tartanak members a focused coding workspace in VS Code’s right sidebar. It understands the open project and can help you move from a question to verified changes while keeping you informed throughout the task.

  • Inspect and explain code, errors, project structure, and active files.
  • Create and edit files with clear live progress.
  • Run commands and tests using the access policy you choose.
  • Attach documents, images, PDFs, and audio when they are useful to the task.
  • Choose a model, reasoning level, and access policy for each project.
  • Continue long-running work across temporary disconnects or VS Code reloads.
  • Queue follow-up prompts while the current task is still working.
  • Keep project-specific chat history locally in VS Code.
  • Use your selected capabilities—including skills, agents, frameworks, tools, MCP entries, plugins, and working styles.

Get started

  1. Install Tartanak Agent from the VS Code Marketplace.
  2. Open the Tartanak icon in the right-side Secondary Sidebar.
  3. Select Sign in or create account.
  4. Complete the email verification in your browser and approve the displayed device.
  5. Open a project folder and tell Tartanak what you want to accomplish.

If the right sidebar is hidden, enable View → Appearance → Secondary Side Bar.

Tartanak Agent requires an active account on cli.tartanak.com. Usage and available capabilities follow your organization’s account policy.

A clear, controllable agent

The composer keeps the controls you use during a task close to your prompt. Everything else lives in the dedicated Settings view:

Control What it does
Model Selects an available model for the conversation.
Local access Chooses whether tools require approval, remain plan-only, or run automatically.
+ Attach Adds supporting files such as documents, images, PDFs, or audio.
Microphone Opens Tartanak's secure browser recorder and returns an editable transcript to the composer.
History Reopens recent conversations for the current account and project.
Settings Opens reasoning, capabilities, account, workspace, and update controls.
Stop Ends the active task whenever you choose.

While the agent works, Current step and Live activity show what is happening: reasoning, commands, file updates, verification, and completion. Quiet or complex operations remain connected instead of being treated as failed work.

Voice prompts

Select the microphone beside the attachment button to dictate a prompt. Tartanak opens a short-lived recorder on cli.tartanak.com because VS Code extension webviews do not expose reliable microphone permission across desktop and remote environments. Record up to 90 seconds; the private Tartanak Whisper service transcribes it and returns the text to the same composer for review. The prompt is never sent automatically, raw audio is not stored, and delivered transcript text is redacted after a short retention window.

Choose the right access level

Ask before tools

Tartanak asks for confirmation before running a workspace command or applying a local change. This is the recommended setting for unfamiliar projects.

Plan only

Tartanak investigates the request and prepares an actionable plan without changing local files.

Allow All

Tartanak may run enabled local tools without asking each time. Use this only in a workspace you trust and review the live activity as it works.

Personal capabilities

Your Tartanak account can provide reusable working styles and specialist capabilities. Open Settings → Capabilities to activate the optional items you want for your own sessions. Optional skills, agents, frameworks, plugins, MCP entries, guidance, and vibes start disabled. Core project inspection and editing tools remain available and are controlled by the selected local-access policy.

Administrators can publish and manage the shared catalog from the Tartanak dashboard. Enabling a catalog entry does not automatically provide third-party credentials; integrations that require authorization must still be connected separately.

Account, usage, and devices

Open Account dashboard from the extension menu to:

  • review your usage and remaining allowance;
  • see connected devices and sessions;
  • set session limits;
  • revoke a device you no longer use;
  • manage your selected capabilities.

Sign-in credentials are stored in VS Code’s encrypted Secret Storage. They are not written into project files, workspace settings, or Git. You can revoke this VS Code device at any time from the dashboard.

Updates

Extensions installed from the Marketplace receive updates through VS Code. You can also select Check for updates from the Tartanak menu. Reload VS Code when prompted to activate a newly installed version.

For networks where Marketplace installation is unavailable, download the current verified VSIX from the Tartanak documentation.

Requirements

  • Visual Studio Code 1.106.0 or newer
  • An internet connection to cli.tartanak.com
  • An active Tartanak account
  • An open workspace folder for project file and command tools

Troubleshooting

The Tartanak icon is not visible

Open View → Appearance → Secondary Side Bar, then run Tartanak: Open Agent from the Command Palette.

The agent cannot edit or run a command

Make sure a workspace folder or saved project file is open, then check the selected Local access policy. Tartanak pins every local action to the detected project root.

Sign-in is requested again

Complete the device approval once more, then review Dashboard → Sessions for old or revoked devices. Current releases keep active device sessions connected unless they are revoked or the account is deactivated.

A task is still working

Review Current step and Live activity. Larger edits can remain quiet while the next action is prepared. The active request and project bridge are saved locally; if VS Code reloads or the connection drops, reopen the same project and Tartanak reconnects. You can also send continue to resume unfinished work from the preserved conversation and current files.
