AssessME Grader
Check your work while you write it. Your instructor publishes a set of checks with the
assignment; AssessME Grader runs them on your code and tells you, in plain words, what is
already correct and where to look next. No test tools to learn, no terminal, no stack traces.
Documentation
What It Does
- Adds a Check my work button to the AssessME Grader panel (beaker icon in the activity
bar) and to the status bar, whenever the open folder contains checks from your instructor
(
.assessme/tests/student_checks.json).
- Saves your files, runs the checks on your own computer, and shows the result per task:
✓ or ✗ for each requirement, how many checks passed, and how many tasks are complete.
- Explains every failed check in plain language and opens your code at the right line.
- Explains problems that stop all checks once, instead of failing everything: a syntax error,
a file that does not compile, code that waits for input when the file loads.
- Keeps a short history of your earlier checks.
- Supports Python and Java assignments.
What You See
Your instructor decides how much the checks show:
- Guided: a hint for each requirement that is not right yet. Hints show where to look;
they never give the answer.
- Public: what was expected and what your code gave.
The checks you see are there to help you while you work. Your instructor grades with more
checks than the ones shown here, so passing everything is a very good sign, not a guaranteed
grade.
Usage
- Open the assignment folder your instructor gave you.
- Click Check my work in the AssessME Grader panel or in the status bar.
- Read the results, fix what is marked ✗, and check again as often as you like.
Requirements
- Visual Studio Code 1.85 or later.
- For Python assignments: Python 3.9 or newer (the same Python you use for the assignment).
On Windows, tick Add python.exe to PATH in the Python installer.
- For Java assignments: a Java JDK (
javac and java), for example Eclipse Temurin.
- A trusted workspace: the checks run your code, so the extension only works after you trust
the assignment folder.
If Python or the JDK is installed somewhere unusual, set assessme.grader.pythonPath or
assessme.grader.javaHome in the VS Code settings. The panel shows what to install when
something is missing.
Privacy
Everything runs on your computer. AssessME Grader makes no network requests and sends nothing
anywhere. It reads the checks file and the code files of the open assignment, runs your code
from a temporary copy, and keeps a short list of your earlier results in VS Code's workspace
storage. When AssessME Process is installed and recording, each check adds one line to your
process log: the time and how many checks passed. The full privacy notice (PRIVACY.md) is included with the extension.
