SAM — Simplifying AI Management
SAM is a business assistant for owners of small and medium businesses. It works with Claude,
and it knows your business: your customers, your jobs, your numbers and the way your team
does things. You can learn more at sme.ec.
This extension brings SAM into VS Code. It does two things:
- It gives VS Code the SAM look. A clean light theme in SAM blue (and a dark one if you
prefer), with "SAM" in the title bar.
- It adds a SAM panel. Click Sam's face in the bar on the left. From there you connect
Claude to your business and keep everything in one place.
What the SAM panel does
- My Businesses. One card for each business you work with. Each card shows whether
Claude is connected to that business, and gives you one button to connect or open it.
- Connect a business. Click Connect, then sign in to your business as yourself and
approve. You only do this once per business. Claude can then work with that
business's information.
- Refresh my skills. Your business keeps its own proven ways of doing jobs (quoting,
checks, reports and so on). This button puts short pointers to them on your computer, so
Claude knows they exist. The skills themselves stay with your business.
- Help and learning. Links to the free SAM members area, the setup guide, and help with
using your voice instead of typing.
How to connect a business
You need Claude Code (from Anthropic) on your computer first. The setup
guide in the SAM panel walks you through it.
- Open the SAM panel (Sam's face, on the left).
- If your business is already connected in Claude, it shows up by itself. Click Refresh
if you don't see it yet.
- Otherwise click + Add a business, type its name, and paste the address your business
gave you. It starts with
https:// and ends with /mcp.
- Click Connect. A Claude window opens. Choose your business, then Authenticate.
- Your browser opens your business's sign-in page. Sign in as yourself and approve.
The card turns to Connected. Click Open Claude whenever you want to work.
Your business may also send you a link that adds itself to the panel in one click.
Using Claude in the browser or the Claude app
The panel shows the address of each business with a Copy address button. In Claude, open
Settings, then Connectors, then Add custom connector, and paste it.
Switching the look
Installing SAM switches VS Code to the SAM theme. To change it, open the Command Palette
(Ctrl+Shift+P), choose Preferences: Color Theme, and pick SAM, SAM Dark or any
other theme.
What SAM checks, and what it never does
- Updates. About once a day, SAM reads a public notice at
https://sme.ec/sam-desktop/latest.json to see which SAM look is current. Nothing about you
or your work is sent. When SAM is installed from the Marketplace, VS Code keeps it up to
date by itself and the panel simply says "Updates are automatic".
- Your businesses. When a business is added or found in Claude, SAM reads that business's
own public connection details once, to check it is a SAM business. It only contacts
addresses you have added or connected yourself.
- On your computer. SAM asks Claude Code which businesses it is connected to, and opens
Claude in a terminal when you click Connect, Open Claude or Refresh my skills.
- Never. SAM does not collect usage data, does not track you, and never sees or stores
your passwords. You sign in to each business in your own browser.
