Rikka Code

An AI coding agent for VS Code — like Claude Code or Copilot Chat — that runs on the models you already configured in RikkaHub.

RikkaHub is an Android LLM client with a built-in local web server. Rikka Code connects to that server, so every provider and model you set up in RikkaHub (OpenAI, Gemini, DeepSeek, Claude, local models…) becomes a coding agent inside your editor.

Features

  • Chat panel in the Activity Bar (or as an editor tab), with markdown, syntax-highlighted code blocks and live streaming.
  • Code block actions: Copy, Insert at cursor, Apply to file (with a diff review), Open in a new file, Paste into the terminal.
  • Agent mode: Rikka explores your workspace, edits files and runs commands. Each change waits for your approval.
    • Tools: read_file, list_files, glob, search, edit_file, write_file, run_command, get_diagnostics.
    • Edits open in VS Code's diff editor. You choose Accept, Reject or Accept all.
    • Commands wait for Run or Deny.
    • A Changed files bar lists everything Rikka modified. You can view the diff, revert or keep each file.
    • If you reject a change, the agent pauses so you can tell it what to do instead.
  • Plan mode: read-only exploration that ends with a step-by-step plan.
  • Chat mode: plain conversation. The active file or selection is shared as context.
  • MCP mode: native tool calling. Rikka Code starts an MCP server (Streamable HTTP) that RikkaHub connects to, so models with tool calling use the tools directly.
  • Context:
    • The active file and selection are shared automatically. Click the eye chip to turn this off.
    • Type @ to add other files, or use the paperclip or the Explorer context menu.
    • Paste or drop images.
    • A RIKKA.md or AGENTS.md at the project root is loaded as project memory.
  • Skills (/skills): reusable instruction packs in the standard SKILL.md format, the same one RikkaHub and Claude Code use.
    • In Agent, Plan and MCP modes, Rikka sees the list of skills and loads a matching one by itself with the use_skill tool.
    • You can also run a skill directly with /<skill-name> your request.
  • Slash commands: /new, /skills, /explain, /fix, /tests, /review, /refactor, /doc, /init, /agent, /plan, /chat, /mcp.
  • RikkaHub integration:
    • Conversation history with search, rename and delete. It is shared with the app, so you can continue a chat on your phone.
    • Assistant, model and reasoning-effort pickers, and a web search toggle.
    • Branch navigation, retry, edit and resend, and fork.
    • Token usage per message.
    • Approval of RikkaHub's own tool calls.
  • Editor commands (right-click → Rikka Code): Explain, Fix, Generate tests, Review, Add selection to chat.

Setup

  1. Install rikka-code-1.0.0.vsix: Ctrl+Shift+P → Extensions: Install from VSIX…
  2. In RikkaHub on your phone, open Settings → Web server and start it. Your phone and computer must be on the same Wi-Fi, and Localhost only must be off.
  3. Click the Rikka Code icon in the Activity Bar. Enter the address shown in the app (for example http://192.168.1.20:8080), or click Scan local network.
  4. If you enabled an access password (JWT) in RikkaHub, enter it. It is stored in VS Code's encrypted secret storage.

Skills

Type /skills, or use … → Skills… or the toolbar icon. The panel lets you browse, filter, enable or disable, edit, create and delete skills.

Where skills come from (the first one found wins when two have the same name):

Source Location
Project .rikka/skills/<name>/SKILL.md (also .claude/skills and .agents/skills)
Personal ~/.rikka/skills/<name>/SKILL.md (also ~/.claude/skills)
RikkaHub Skills enabled for the current assistant in the app. They are read from the phone through the web server, and ⤓ copies one to your computer.
Built-in skill-writer: run /skill-writer <what you want> and Rikka writes a new skill with you.

Adding skills

  • New creates a skill from a template.
  • From GitHub installs one or several skills from a folder URL, for example https://github.com/anthropics/skills/tree/main/skills/pdf.

SKILL.md format

---
name: release-notes
description: Write release notes from recent changes. Use when the user asks for a changelog.
---
# Release notes
1. Run `git log --oneline -20` …
2. Follow template.md (linked files are loaded on demand).

Only the name and description are always sent to the model. The body, and any files it links to, are loaded only when needed.

MCP mode (optional)

  1. Choose MCP in the mode picker, then open … → Native tools (MCP).
  2. In RikkaHub, go to Settings → MCP → Add. Pick Streamable HTTP and paste the URL shown. The URL contains a secret token.
  3. Back in VS Code, click Enable to turn the server on for the current assistant.

Edits and commands still ask for approval in VS Code.

Keyboard

Shortcut Action
Ctrl/Cmd+Alt+K Open the chat
Ctrl/Cmd+Alt+L Add selection to chat
Ctrl/Cmd+Alt+N New chat (chat focused)
Enter / Shift+Enter Send / new line
Esc Stop generation / close popup

Settings

The main settings are rikkaCode.serverUrl, rikkaCode.approvals.edits (ask or auto) and rikkaCode.approvals.commands (ask, auto or deny). Others include rikkaCode.maxAgentSteps, rikkaCode.openDiffOnEdit, rikkaCode.pauseOnReject and rikkaCode.mcp.port. See all of them under Settings → Rikka Code.

How it works

RikkaHub runs the model on your phone, so it cannot reach your files. In Agent mode, Rikka Code adds tool instructions to your first message. It then parses the <tool_call> blocks in the reply, runs them locally with your approval, and sends back <tool_result> blocks. This loop works with any model.

In MCP mode, the same tools are exposed over the Model Context Protocol, and RikkaHub calls them natively.

API used: /api/conversations/* (REST + SSE stream), /api/events (settings stream), /api/settings/*, /api/files/upload and /api/auth/token.

Development

node test/e2e.js # end-to-end test against a fake RikkaHub server
node test/skills.js # skills: discovery, use_skill, /name, RikkaHub, GitHub, MCP
node test/activate.js # activation / command registration
npx @vscode/vsce package --allow-missing-repository
