rmvbg – Remove Background

Cut out. Capture. Record. — free background remover by rmvbg.xyz.

Free local background removal for PNG, JPEG and WebP. Select one or more images in Explorer, then choose rmvbg: Remove background. Or use the Command Palette with an image open. A panel shows each file's progress. Finished PNGs are saved next to the originals; existing names get -2, -3, etc. Choose Open to view a result.

Settings

  • rmvbg.background: transparent (default) or white.
  • rmvbg.suffix: -rmvbg by default. Path separators and unsafe filename characters are removed.

Privacy and license

Images are processed locally in VS Code's webview, not uploaded. Internet access is needed to load IMG.LY background-removal 1.7.0 from jsDelivr and model files from staticimgly.com (about 90 MB on first run; browser caching may avoid later downloads). Runtime compatibility depends on the VS Code webview and its WebAssembly support.

This extension is AGPL-3.0; see LICENSE. It loads the AGPL-3.0 IMG.LY engine at runtime. Free to use; no rmvbg API key.

Publishing

Install Node.js, then run npx @vscode/vsce package --no-dependencies --allow-missing-repository. Publishing to Marketplace needs an Azure DevOps publisher, a publisher account matching rmvbg, and a token: npx @vscode/vsce publish. Open VSX is an alternative: register its namespace and publish with npx ovsx publish and an Open VSX token.
