Compare & Analyze for VS Code
See exactly what changed between two files, without leaving VS Code. Every difference is highlighted side by side.
Your first month is free. Comparing needs a license key; installing the extension costs nothing. Run Compare & Analyze: Get a Free
License (Command Palette, Ctrl+Shift+P), tell me a little about how you plan to use it, and I email you a free key.
What you can compare
- Excel and CSV: cell by cell, so one changed number in a big sheet is easy to spot.
- Text, JSON, XML, HTML and Markdown: line by line, with the changed words marked.
- PDF and images: side by side, with the differences outlined.
.zip, .7z, .rar files and whole folders: which files differ, then click one to see its changes.
Quick start
- Install it: in the Extensions panel (
Ctrl+Shift+X) search for Compare & Analyze, check the publisher is rizkura96, click Install.
- Get your key: run Compare & Analyze: Get a Free License, then Compare & Analyze: Enter License Key and paste it.
- Compare: right-click a file in the Explorer and choose Compare & Analyze: Select for Compare, then right-click another file and choose
Compare & Analyze: Compare with Selected.
(The Command Palette opens with Ctrl+Shift+P, or Cmd+Shift+P on a Mac. Type a few letters of a command and press Enter.)
Ways to compare
- Two files or two folders: the steps above.
- A changed file in Git: click it in the Source Control list. Excel, PDF, pictures and archives open here automatically; for any other file,
right-click it and choose Compare & Analyze: Compare with HEAD. You see your last commit (committed) against what is on your disk (local).
To change what a click opens, search the Settings for Open Changes Here.
- A file's history: right-click a file and choose Compare & Analyze: Compare Commits…. Pick a commit, then choose what it changed,
another commit, or your file now. The ‹ and › buttons above the result step through the history one commit at a time, so you can
find when something changed.
Your license, updates and privacy
- License: the first month is free. Before it ends I will write to you; continuing after that is a paid license, and you decide then.
Compare & Analyze: Show License tells you when your key ends.
- Updates: VS Code updates the extension for you.
- Privacy: to compare, the two files and your key are sent over a secure connection to the Compare & Analyze server, compared in memory and
not stored. That is why the extension needs the internet and a key.
If something does not work
- "A license key is needed" or "has been withdrawn": run Compare & Analyze: Enter License Key, or Get a Free License if you have none.
- "The server could not be reached": check your internet connection and try again.
- Anything else: open View → Output, choose Compare & Analyze, and send me what you see there with the version from Compare & Analyze:
Show Version, on the Contact page: https://compareanalyze.vercel.app/contact
