PromptBox: Universal Coding Agent Prompt Memory

"Every prompt, one box."
A private, local-first memory library for prompts written to coding agents and developer tools.

VS Code Extension License: MIT Zero Telemetry

🎯 What is PromptBox?

Developers craft intricate, multi-step instructions for AI coding assistants like Antigravity IDE, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, and VS Code Chat. Too often, these high-value prompts get buried across disjointed chat transcripts, temporary editor tabs, and forgotten terminal sessions.

PromptBox gives you a unified, dedicated control room inside VS Code to:

  • Save & Organize: Instantly catalog prompts by agent, project, tags, and collections.
  • Run Templates: Define reusable prompts with dynamic {{placeholders}} that prompt you for inputs before copying.
  • Search at Speed: In-memory, instantaneous multi-attribute filtering across titles, tags, prompts, and notes.
  • Import Transcripts: Parse your local Antigravity IDE .jsonl transcript logs or VS Code Chat JSON exports with complete privacy.
  • Own Your Data: Pure JSON file storage on your machine, with atomic writes, automatic backups, and zero cloud dependency.

✨ Core Features

🗂️ 1. Local-First Library & Collections

  • Organize by Intent: Group prompts into collections such as Refactoring, Code Review, Unit Testing, Architecture & System Design, Debugging, and Documentation.
  • Rich Metadata: Tag prompts, associate them with specific target agents (Antigravity, Copilot, Claude, Cursor, Custom), and record execution notes or model parameters.
  • Favoriting & Pinning: Keep mission-critical prompts one click away.

⚡ 2. Dynamic Template Engine

  • Use {{variable}} syntax in prompt bodies.
  • Running a template surfaces an interactive form with auto-detected fields and default values.
  • Fill the fields, hit Instantiate & Copy, and your tailored prompt is ready in your clipboard.

🔍 3. Lightning-Fast In-Memory Search

  • Instant search across title, prompt text, tags, and associated project.
  • Filter seamlessly by collection, target agent, favorite status, or sort by Most Recently Used (MRU), Date Created, or Alphabetical.

📥 4. Agent History & Transcript Adapters

  • Antigravity IDE: Import conversation histories directly from your .jsonl transcript files (type: "USER_INPUT" parsing).
  • VS Code Chat: Ingest exported session JSON files.
  • Clear Privacy Boundary: No hidden background screen-scraping or rogue file watchers. You choose what to import, inspect the preview, and confirm.

🛡️ 5. Zero Telemetry & Atomic Reliability

  • Zero Telemetry: No analytics, no phone-home servers, no cloud storage.
  • Atomic File Operations: Storage writes to a temp file before renaming, preventing file corruption if the IDE reloads.
  • Automated Rolling Backups: Maintains automatic timestamped snapshots with one-click restore.
  • JSON & Markdown Portability: Export your entire library or specific prompts to readable Markdown or structured JSON at any time.

🧩 Template Syntax Example

When creating a template prompt, wrap your placeholders in double curly braces:

You are a senior engineer reviewing the following code for {{language}} performance issues.

Target module: {{module_name}}
Focus areas:
- Memory efficiency and leak detection
- Asynchronous bottleneck resolution
- Concurrency and safety

Please analyze the following snippet and suggest concrete fixes:
{{code_snippet}}

PromptBox will automatically detect:

  1. language
  2. module_name
  3. code_snippet

PromptBox renders an instant form in the UI to populate these variables, produces the substituted result, copies it to the clipboard, and updates your usage analytics.

📂 Storage & Data Architecture

PromptBox stores all records in standard JSON files inside VS Code's globalStorageUri:

  • prompts.json: Main datastore (schema version 1.0.0).
  • backups/: Rolling snapshot directory created prior to schema upgrades and major operations.

See ARCHITECTURE.md for full system design details and PRIVACY.md for our local-only commitments.
