Open Markdown and start reading immediately. Markdown Instant Viewer displays .md files as rendered documents directly in the editor tab, with clean, GitHub-inspired styling. There is no separate preview pane to open or manage.
Install
In VS Code, open Extensions (Ctrl+Shift+X or Cmd+Shift+X), search for Markdown Instant Viewer by pedrora22, and select Install.
Read and edit Markdown
Open any .md file to see the rendered document. To edit its Markdown source:
Open the Command Palette (Ctrl+Shift+P or Cmd+Shift+P).
Run View: Reopen Editor With....
Select Text Editor.
To return to the rendered document, run View: Reopen Editor With... again and select Markdown Preview. This is VS Code's name for the rendered editor; it opens in the same tab, not in a side pane.
What you get
Rendered Markdown as the default editor for .md files.
Readable headings, tables, code blocks, links, lists, and images.
Light, dark, and high-contrast styling.
VS Code's built-in Markdown rendering and automatic updates when the file changes.
If a file still opens as source text
Close and reopen the file after installing the extension. If it still opens as text, check your workbench.editorAssociations setting: an association you configured yourself takes precedence over this extension's default.
