Codex Approval Bell by Payras Software

A gentle local sound when Codex needs your approval.

Created by Louis Payras, founder and developer at Payras Software.

payras-software.com · ventes@payras-software.com

Why this extension exists

Codex can continue working independently for several minutes, then pause while waiting for an approval. If VS Code is in the background, that request can be easy to miss.

Codex Approval Bell plays the gentle Windows Windows Notify.wav sound once when an approval request appears. It helps you return to Codex at the right moment without adding a persistent timer or repeatedly scanning the screen.

What it does

  • detects Codex command, file-change and permission approval requests;
  • plays one soft local notification sound;
  • runs a real Codex protocol compatibility check before activation;
  • repeats that check once whenever the installed Codex extension changes version;
  • backs up the previous Codex CLI setting;
  • provides a one-command restoration path;
  • keeps the Codex child process tied to the relay lifecycle, including VS Code reloads.
  • ships with a Payras Software Authenticode-signed and Sectigo-timestamped relay.

What it never does

  • it never approves, refuses or clicks a request;
  • it never reads or stores your prompt or command contents;
  • it never sends telemetry or project data to Payras Software;
  • it never activates itself automatically;
  • it never modifies the files of the official Codex extension.

Quick start

Requirements: Windows, Visual Studio Code and the official Codex – OpenAI's coding agent extension (openai.chatgpt).

  1. Run Codex Approval Bell: Test Gentle Sound.
  2. Run Codex Approval Bell: Run Compatibility Check.
  3. Run Codex Approval Bell: Enable Protected Relay.
  4. Confirm the activation, then choose Reload Window.
  5. When Codex asks for an approval, the gentle sound plays once.

The status bar shows Codex Bell • active while the protected relay is enabled.

Disable or uninstall safely

Before uninstalling, run:

Codex Approval Bell: Disable and Restore Codex

The extension restores the previous chatgpt.cliExecutable value, verifies the restoration and offers to reload the VS Code window.

Privacy and local diagnostics

The relay inspects only the JSONL method name needed to recognize an approval request. It forwards the original protocol bytes unchanged.

The optional local diagnostic log contains timestamps, process lifecycle information and the approval method name. It contains no prompt, command, file path or project content. By default it is stored under:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\Payras Software\Codex Approval Bell\Payras_Codex_Notifier.log

The extension also stores a private backup of the previous profile setting and a one-line path to the official Codex executable. These files remain local. PRIVACY.md and SECURITY.md are included with the extension for the complete commitments.

Compatibility notice

This Windows extension uses the Codex development CLI override exposed by the official VS Code extension. Codex Approval Bell performs both a CLI version check and a real app-server initialization check before enabling the relay. A future Codex update may require a compatible update of Codex Approval Bell.

Ordinary Codex updates are discovered automatically. When the installed Codex extension version changes, Codex Approval Bell runs its compatibility check once for that new version, without polling the screen or running a permanent timer. If the check fails, the extension warns you and offers the restoration command. Because the relay forwards protocol bytes unchanged, the expected failure mode after an unknown protocol change is a missing sound, never an automatic approval.

  • elle détecte les demandes d’autorisation de commande, de modification de fichier et de permission ;
  • elle joue un son local discret, sans surveillance visuelle répétitive ;
  • elle vérifie réellement le protocole Codex avant l’activation ;
  • elle recommence automatiquement cette vérification après un changement de version de Codex ;
  • elle sauvegarde le réglage Codex précédent ;
  • elle permet de restaurer Codex avec une seule commande ;
  • elle reste stable lors des rechargements de la fenêtre VS Code.

Ce qu’elle ne fait jamais

  • elle n’accepte et ne refuse aucune demande ;
  • elle ne clique jamais à la place de l’utilisateur ;
  • elle n’enregistre ni les prompts, ni les commandes, ni les chemins de fichiers ;
  • elle n’envoie aucune donnée de projet à Payras Software ;
  • elle ne modifie aucun fichier de l’extension officielle Codex ;
  • elle ne s’active jamais toute seule.

Mise en route

  1. Lancez Codex Approval Bell: Test Gentle Sound.
  2. Lancez Codex Approval Bell: Run Compatibility Check.
  3. Lancez Codex Approval Bell: Enable Protected Relay.
  4. Confirmez puis choisissez Reload Window.
