Early preview: work with your local OpenRig team from VS Code or Cursor. Join as the editor's seat, hand work to the team, see what needs you, open an agent's terminal, review results as diffs, and give your editor's agent the team's tools.
Installation
Launch VS Code Quick Open (Ctrl+P), paste the following command, and press enter.
An early first step: bring your local OpenRig team into your editor. The extension makes the editor a seat on the team, so you can hand work to agents, see what needs you, and review what comes back without leaving the code.
It needs OpenRig running on the same computer. Install OpenRig, start a team, then open your project here.
Get started
Open the OpenRig view in the activity bar.
Click Join this team as my editor. It finds your local team, adds a seat for this editor (for example work-vscode@my-team) and checks it.
That's it. The status bar shows how many items need you.
Already have a seat? Use OpenRig: Choose seat instead.
What it does
Needs-you count in the status bar.
Sidebar:Needs me (items the team sent you), My requests (what you handed off, followed to where it is now) and Team (each seat and what it's doing).
Hand to team… from the editor or Explorer context menu. The request carries the file, the selected lines and text, and your git branch.
Open seat terminal: watch or type to an agent in its own terminal, inside the editor.
Review result as diff: opens the branch or commit the team handed back in the editor's diff view.
Reply…, Claim, Close on items in the sidebar.
Your editor's agent gets the team's tools. In VS Code, Copilot's agent mode sees an OpenRig MCP server that runs as this editor's seat. In Cursor, Join writes .cursor/mcp.json. Turn it on once under Customize → MCPs → openrig, because Cursor keeps project MCP servers off until you enable them.
Settings
Setting
What it's for
openrig.seat
This editor's address on the team (Join sets it).
openrig.rigPath
The rig command, if the extension can't find it. Run which rig in a terminal.
openrig.env
Extra environment for rig, such as OPENRIG_PORT when your team runs on another daemon.
openrig.defaultDestination
The seat that receives hand-offs by default.
openrig.pollSeconds
How often the sidebar refreshes (default 20).
openrig.mcp.enabled
Offer the OpenRig MCP server to the editor's agent.
Known limits (preview)
Local only. It talks to OpenRig through the rig command on this computer, not to remote or cloud teams.
The sidebar refreshes by polling, not live events.
Review result as diff guesses the base from the branch or commit named on the item. Newer OpenRig versions can record an exact base and result, and the extension uses them when they're present.
The editor's seat has no terminal of its own, so OpenRig may raise "undelivered wake" items for it. They show in Needs me.
It adds no chat participant and starts no agents itself.
