Anna Learning

Anna Learning is the student VS Code extension for the Anna Learning System, developed by the Programming and Software Lab (PSLab) at National Central University. It brings assigned programming exercises into VS Code and provides in-editor guidance and coding assistance through the Anna sidebar.

Before you start

You will need:

  • VS Code 1.115 or newer.
  • An Anna Learning System account with an assigned exercise.
  • One project folder open in VS Code. Multi-root workspaces are not supported.
  • A trusted workspace so the Coding Agent can use the tools required by your exercise.

Install the extension from the VS Code Marketplace or from the VSIX file provided by your instructor, then reload VS Code if prompted.

Start an exercise

  1. Open and trust the project folder for your exercise in VS Code.
  2. Sign in to the Anna Learning System and open the assigned exercise.
  3. Select the action that opens the exercise in VS Code.
  4. In your browser, confirm the displayed account and exercise, then select Connect to VS Code.
  5. Return to the same VS Code window. In the Anna sidebar, confirm the folder and select Connect Workspace & Continue.
  6. Follow the instructions shown in the Anna sidebar.

You do not need to configure a server URL or API key.

Use the Anna sidebar

The Anna sidebar displays the requirement and the actions available for your current exercise. Follow the instructions in the sidebar, use the Requirement Assistant when it is available, and review the Coding Agent's work before continuing.

Tips

  • Keep the Anna Learning System and the same VS Code window open while starting an exercise.
  • Read the requirement and sidebar instructions before asking the Coding Agent to make changes.
  • Review the Coding Agent's work and test the result yourself before continuing.
  • If the Coding Agent was interrupted, use Refresh coding status in the Anna sidebar before continuing.

Troubleshooting

  • The Anna sidebar is empty: Run Developer: Reload Window, then reopen the exercise from the Anna Learning System.
  • The workspace cannot be connected: Make sure exactly one trusted project folder is open and that it belongs to the selected exercise.
  • The session expired: Return to the Anna Learning System and open the exercise again.
  • The Coding Agent is still marked as running: Wait for it to finish, then select Refresh coding status.
  • The Coding Agent is unavailable: Check your network connection and try again. If the problem continues, contact your instructor or course staff.
