GTD Brain — capture from your editor, work your GTD lists in the sidebar

GTD Brain is a Getting Things Done board: Inbox, Next Actions, Projects, Waiting For and Someday/Maybe — with an AI agent that clarifies and organizes for you, and connectors so ChatGPT and Claude can run it with you. This extension is its capture surface for VS Code.

Half of what you need to remember shows up while you are coding: the TODO you just wrote, the flaky test you promised to look at, the message to send once the PR lands. Capture it in one keystroke, keep coding, and clarify it later — on the same board you see on the web, on your phone, and in ChatGPT or Claude.

What it does

  • Capture what is under your cursor. Press Ctrl+Alt+G (Cmd+Alt+G on a Mac) and the extension captures the right thing: the text you selected (as a quote), the TODO or FIXME comment on the current line, or otherwise the file and line you are on — each with a link back to that line, so a code smell becomes a next action without copying and pasting. The same captures sit above every TODO comment as a CodeLens and in the editor's right-click menu.
  • Type a thought in the sidebar. The GTD Brain view has a capture field at the top; press Enter and it lands at the top of your Inbox. Below it, your lists: the top of your Inbox, your Next Actions with their context, and your Projects — so you can see what is next without switching windows. Clarifying and editing happen on the dashboard, one click away.
  • Your Inbox count in the status bar. One glance tells you what is waiting; click it to open the board.
  • Sign in with an email code. Use the email you use on the dashboard; a one-time code is sent to it. No password, no API token to paste.
  • One board everywhere. Everything captured here is on the web, iOS and Android apps in real time — and your AI assistant sees it too if you have connected ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code or Cursor to GTD Brain.

Getting started

  1. Install the extension and open the GTD Brain view in the Activity Bar.
  2. Click Sign in, enter your email, and type the code we send you. New email, new account — nothing to set up on the web first.
  3. Select some code, or put the cursor on a TODO, and press Ctrl+Alt+G / Cmd+Alt+G (or run GTD Brain: Capture from the Command Palette). A short walkthrough opens on first run.
