Micromelon for VS Code
Connect to a Micromelon Rover over Bluetooth and run Python programs on it from VS Code.
- Rover Control sidebar: connect by rover ID, run and stop the open file, live sensors
- F5 runs the open Python file on the rover, Shift+F5 stops it
- The running line is marked in the editor and
print output goes to the
Micromelon output panel; input() asks in a box at the top of the window
- Stop halts the rover straight away, even in the middle of a
delay
- Example programs in the sidebar (Examples): click one to open a copy to run or change
- Snippets for the
micromelon API (type mm-)
If Python won't start, Micromelon: Show Log says why and Micromelon: Restart
Python tries again.
Python comes bundled with the extension (with the
micromelon package), so there is nothing else to
install. To use your own interpreter instead, set micromelon.pythonPath.
Development
npm ci
scripts/bundle-python.sh darwin-arm64 # or your platform; needs curl and uv
npm run watch # then F5 in VS Code: "Run Extension"
The bridge's tests (python/tests, no rover needed):
python/runtime/bin/python3.13 -m unittest discover -s python/tests
Without a bundle, the extension falls back to python3 on your PATH, which needs
pip install micromelon.
Building
npm run package -- --target <target> builds a .vsix for one platform after
scripts/bundle-python.sh <target>. CI (.gitea/workflows/build.yml) builds all six
targets (win32-x64, win32-arm64, darwin-x64, darwin-arm64, linux-x64, linux-arm64) on
every push and keeps them as the run's artifact.
The bundled Python and package versions are pinned at the top of
scripts/bundle-python.sh and in python/requirements.txt.
