MDit — Editable Markdown Preview

Opens .md / .markdown files as a rendered page you can edit directly: no split view of source + preview. Type on the rendered page and the change is written back to the Markdown file (save with Cmd/Ctrl+S as usual).

Usage

  • Click a Markdown file. It opens rendered and editable.
  • Formatting: Markdown shortcuts work as you type (# , - , > , ```, **bold**), select text for a formatting toolbar, or type / on an empty line for a block menu.
  • Drop or upload an image and it is saved next to the Markdown file and linked with a relative path.
  • Click the </> icon in the editor title bar (or run MDit: View Markdown Source) to see the raw text.
  • From the raw text, click the preview icon (or run MDit: Open in MDit Editor) to go back.
  • MDit: Toggle Rich Markdown Editor switches between MDit and the plain text editor as the default.

Settings

Setting Default Description
mdit.enabled true Open Markdown files in the MDit editor.
mdit.filePatterns ["*.md", "*.markdown"] Glob patterns to open with MDit.

Notes

  • The editor is Milkdown Crepe. When you edit, the whole file is re-serialized, so unusual formatting (e.g. * bullets, setext headings, extra blank lines) may be normalized. Opening a file without editing never changes it.
  • MDit sets workbench.editorAssociations in your user settings. Before uninstalling, run MDit: Toggle Rich Markdown Editor to remove those entries, or delete them from settings.json.

Build

npm install
npm run package
code --install-extension mdit-0.2.1.vsix
