BinEye
BinEye shows and edits integers bit by bit. This extension opens BinEye Words documents
(*.words.bineye) in VS Code, in the same editor as the BinEye app.
What the editor does
- Number sheets. One integer of 8 to 1024 bits. Click a bit to flip it, type a value in any
block, and see the value split into rows of 8, 16, 32 and 64-bit words, signed or unsigned.
- Formats. Show every word in any base from 2 to 64 and as a float (IEEE 754; E5M2 or E4M3
for 8 bits). Color rows show 32-bit words as RGBA colors, with hex, rgb, hsl and lab values.
- Calculator sheets. Connect numbers, operations (AND, OR, shifts, …), selectors, composers,
converters and monitors in a graph; the results update as you edit.
- Export. Save a calculator sheet as an SVG or PNG file, through VS Code's save dialog.
- Sheets. A document holds several number and calculator sheets, each in its own tab.
The BinEye view
The BinEye icon in the Activity Bar opens the Documents view: every *.bineye document of the
workspace in one list, each labeled with its folder. New and Refresh sit in the view's
title; in an open document, the editor title has a New button too. When the workspace has no
documents yet, the view offers New, Open and Help instead.
Create and open documents
- New: run BinEye: New Words Document from the Command Palette, press New in the BinEye
view or in an open document's title, or choose File > New File… > BinEye Words Document. The
new document is untitled until you save it.
- Open: open any
*.words.bineye file, for example by double-clicking it in the Explorer or in
the BinEye view, or run BinEye: Open Document… to pick any file. It opens in BinEye.
- As text: the file is JSON. Use Reopen Editor With… > Text Editor to see or edit the text.
- Documents made with BinEye 1.x open as well; they are saved in the 2.0 format.
Editing
- Save, Save As, Revert and hot exit work as for any other file.
- Undo and redo (Ctrl+Z, Ctrl+Y) work on the document's text: one step for each burst of edits.
The view follows.
- Split editors, a text editor beside BinEye, and changes on disk (for example from git) all
show in the BinEye view.
Requirements and limits
- Desktop VS Code 1.90 or newer. VS Code for the Web (vscode.dev) is not supported yet.
- The editor is dark only. It doesn't follow VS Code's light themes yet.
