Apple Nature for Visual Studio Code

macOS system neutrals, Nature-ink accents, Okabe-Ito color-blind-safe syntax highlighting, ambient dual-pool glow drift, Apple cubic-bezier motion curves, and a contrast budget that is mathematically verified rather than guessed.

Apple Nature Preview

Overview

Apple Nature brings Apple's design philosophy—clarity, depth, and organic elegance—directly into Visual Studio Code. Every surface, contrast ratio, and motion curve is derived systematically:

  • Tailored Light & Dark Icon Families: 106 definitions covering 329 file extensions and 38 folder categories with distinct palettes for dark and light chrome, achieving high-contrast legibility (4.0:1 – 6.2:1) across both UI themes, with full native support for robotics (ROS/ROS2, URDF, launch), computer vision, DDS networking, embedded hardware (KiCad, STM32, Arduino), 3D meshes, Edge AI models, and all configuration formats.
  • Color-Blind-Safe Syntax: Okabe-Ito CVD-safe hue palette mapped across 20 TextMate scope groups and 22 semantic token types, maintaining consistent syntax paint across language grammars.
  • Ambient Glow & Frosted Glass: Dual-pool lighting drift (cool sky & warm amber) with Apple cubic-bezier easing curves.
  • Derived Status Ramp: Git decorations (added, modified, deleted, untracked, conflicting) and diagnostic errors/warnings solved against the hardest workspace surfaces.
  • Integrated Terminal: Complete 16-slot ANSI ramp harmonized with syntax hues, backed by a resilient terminal.integrated.fontFamily font stack with Nerd Font and modern programming mono fallbacks.

Verified Architecture & Color Budget

A colour theme is a precise map. This package declares 808 workbench colour keys, verified against the live VS Code workbench registry so every surface is intentionally painted without fallbacks or dead tokens.

  • Contrast Verification: The build mathematically checks 143 foreground-on-background pairs—editor text on canvas, inactive tabs, status bar labels, buttons, and syntax tokens—ensuring strict WCAG AA/AAA compliance.
  • Structural Edges: 87 edges that the default layout puts side by side are checked to maintain clear visual boundaries without clutter.
  • Interaction States: 20 interaction states (hover, selection, line highlight, caret, bracket pairs) are calibrated as linear-light ladder steps.

Tailored Icon Theme

The built-in Apple Nature icon theme provides tailored glyphs for 329 file extensions and 38 specialized folder categories across 106 definitions. Rather than using a single compromised color set, the icon theme automatically shifts palettes between dark and light modes:

Glyphs are resolved directly from VS Code's native Codicon glyph set for crisp rendering at any UI scale.

Motion & Ambient Glow

Apple Nature ships built-in motion defaults via contributes.configurationDefaults:

  • Smooth scrolling enabled across editor, lists, and integrated terminal (workbench.list.smoothScrolling, editor.smoothScrolling, terminal.integrated.smoothScrolling).
  • Smooth cursor caret physics and breathing animation (editor.cursorSmoothCaretAnimation: "on", editor.cursorBlinking: "smooth", editor.cursorWidth: 2).
  • Continuous line & bracket highlights (editor.renderLineHighlight: "all", editor.renderLineHighlightOnlyWhenFocus: false, editor.foldingHighlight: true, editor.linkedEditing: true).
  • Bracket pair colorization, active highlight glow, and closing guides (editor.guides.bracketPairs: active, editor.bracketPairColorization.enabled: true, editor.matchBrackets: always).
  • Responsive Apple hover delay and sticky tooltips (editor.hover.delay: 150, editor.hover.sticky: true).
  • Symbol occurrence and selection illumination (editor.selectionHighlight: true, editor.occurrencesHighlight: singleFile, editor.roundedSelection: true).
  • Structural tree guide rails and ergonomic hierarchy indentation (workbench.tree.renderIndentGuides: always, workbench.tree.indent: 16).
  • Crisp programming font ligatures enabled (editor.fontLigatures: true).
  • Adaptive motion honoring system accessibility preferences (workbench.reduceMotion: auto).

Advanced Ambient Glow & Easing Curves (apple-nature-motion.css)

For full dynamic motion and ambient background lighting, this package includes apple-nature-motion.css featuring:

  1. Apple Cubic-Bezier Easing Curves:
    • swift: cubic-bezier(0.32, 0.72, 0, 1) — Responsive deceleration for tabs and buttons.
    • smooth: cubic-bezier(0.4, 0, 0.2, 1) — Gentle ease-in-out for ambient drift and lists.
    • enter: cubic-bezier(0.05, 0.7, 0.1, 1) — Swift entrance curve for quick open and dialogs.
    • exit: cubic-bezier(0.3, 0, 0.8, 0.15) — Smooth settle and exit curve.
  2. Dual-Pool Ambient Glow:
    • Light mode: Cool sky #BED2F2 (12%, 10%) & Warm amber #EEDAB8 (48%, 27%).
    • Dark mode: Deep indigo #26395E (12%, 10%) & Warm obsidian #40301F (48%, 27%).
    • 120-second continuous organic drift animation.
  3. Frosted Glass Blur:
    • backdrop-filter: blur(18px) saturate(180%) on workbench sidebars and floating panels.

To enable workbench CSS injection:

node vscode/inject-workbench-motion.mjs --install

(Run with --uninstall to restore stock workbench styles at any time.)

Installation

Install the .vsix package directly into your Visual Studio Code instance:

code --install-extension vscode/dist/apple-nature-theme-0.0.1.vsix

Then switch themes via Preferences: Color Theme (Ctrl+K Ctrl+T / Cmd+K Cmd+T):

  • Apple Nature Dark
  • Apple Nature Light

Select the file icon theme via Preferences: File Icon Theme:

  • Apple Nature

Typography & Terminal

  • The theme specifies clean typography pairing system prose with monospace code fonts.
  • Terminal font defaults use terminal.integrated.fontFamily: "CaskaydiaCove Nerd Font Mono, CaskaydiaCove NFM, JetBrains Mono, Consolas, monospace", guaranteeing prompt symbols, powerline separators, and Nerd Font glyphs render crisply without boxes or missing glyphs.
