Kavel — AI Image Generator & Editor for VS Code

Make the image your README, docs or landing page needs without leaving the editor. Type a prompt, and the picture lands in your workspace — and if you're in a Markdown file, the ![image](https://github.com/hanshs474/kavel-vscode/raw/HEAD/…) link is already inserted at your cursor. Right-click any PNG, JPG or WebP to edit it with one sentence.

No API key needed to start. Powered by Kavel.

Commands

Command What it does
Kavel: Generate Image Prompt → aspect ratio → image saved to assets/ (configurable), Markdown link inserted
Kavel: Edit Image with AI Right-click an image → describe the change → edited copy saved next to it
Kavel: Set API Key Store a key in VS Code's secret storage

Free tier, then your account

Out of the box the extension runs on Kavel's free tier: no account, 1K output with a watermark, a few images a day. Enough to try every command.

Run Kavel: Set API Key with a key from kavel.ai/settings/apikeys and every run goes through your account: your credits, no daily ceiling, no watermark on a paid plan, and the model of your choice in kavel.model — Nano Banana 2, GPT Image 2 for 4K, Qwen Image 3 when the picture needs readable text, Seedream 5.0 Pro for photoreal people. See pricing.

Prompts that work

Name the light, the material and the composition — "flat illustration of a rocket leaving a laptop screen, purple and orange, clean background" beats "rocket". For edits, say what must stay the same: the edit model (Nano Banana 2 Lite on the free tier) keeps what it can see and invents what it cannot. Browse the free AI image generator for more starting points.

Notes

  • Free runs wait 25–80 seconds in a queue; paid plans skip it. Progress shows in a cancellable notification.
  • Images you edit are uploaded to Kavel's CDN so the model can read them.
  • Need it in code or CI? SDKs · GitHub Action · ComfyUI nodes.
