DocuFlow

Rendered Markdown diffs you can read, edit and review inside VS Code, with your coding agent's comments anchored to the words they are about.

Specs, plans and docs live in Markdown next to the code, and agents rewrite them all day. Reviewing those changes as source lines hurts: one changed word turns a whole paragraph red, a table becomes a wall of pipes, an image becomes a path. DocuFlow shows the same diff rendered, so you see what changed, not how the source shifted.

The same change in VS Code's text diff and in DocuFlow:

The built-in text diff of a Markdown file

The same diff in DocuFlow, with agent comments on the right

What you get

  • A rendered diff. Side by side or inline, word-level highlights inside paragraphs, list items and table cells. Tables stay tables, images stay images.
  • An editor inside the diff. Type into the rendered document; the diff recomputes as you edit and every save goes to the file on disk.
  • A base you choose. Compare the working tree against the index, HEAD or nothing, per tab.
  • Git integration. Changed Markdown files listed in the Source Control view with one-click stage and unstage, a CodeLens on changed files, Explorer and Source Control context menus, and git difftool support from the terminal.
  • Copy keeps Markdown. A selection copied from either pane pastes into a text editor as Markdown, with headings, emphasis, bullets and links intact. Rich targets still receive rich text.
  • Agent comments. With Claude Code, the agent leaves remarks next to the words they are about. They appear as cards beside the document, a tick resolves them, and they live in a sidecar file that never enters git.
  • Your own comments. Select text and comment; threads are kept per file in your workspace.

Getting started

  1. Open a Markdown file inside a git repository.
  2. Run DocuFlow: Open in DocuFlow (Shift+Alt+Cmd+M on macOS, Ctrl+Shift+Alt+M elsewhere), or right-click the editor tab and choose Open With… › DocuFlow Diff Preview.
  3. Use the chip at the top of the document to pick the base and to switch between Edit (inline) and Review (side by side). The two buttons beside it open the same file in VS Code's text editor or text diff, cursor carried.

Changed Markdown files also appear under DocuFlow Markdown Diffs in the Source Control view.

Agent comments with Claude Code

On first start DocuFlow offers to install a small skill into ~/.claude/skills. With it, Claude Code can attach a remark to a quoted passage of any Markdown file. The remark is stored in .aidiff.jsonl at the repository root, which DocuFlow registers in the clone's .git/info/exclude, so nothing is added to the repository. Both steps are also available as commands: DocuFlow: Install Agent Comment Skill for Claude Code and DocuFlow: Add Agent Comment Convention to AGENTS.md.

Requirements

  • VS Code 1.133 or later.
  • A git repository for diffs. Outside a repository DocuFlow still works as a rendered editor.

Preview notes

DocuFlow is in alpha. Two things to know before you rely on it:

  • Saving re-serializes the file. The editor writes the whole document back from its own model. Hard-wrapped paragraphs are joined into single lines and raw HTML blocks are dropped. Check the diff before you commit an edit made in DocuFlow.
  • Diffs opened by VS Code itself. A Markdown diff opened from a Source Control click or the Timeline arrives as VS Code's text diff. DocuFlow: Open in DocuFlow (Shift+Alt+Cmd+M / Ctrl+Shift+Alt+M) takes the pair apart into one DocuFlow editor comparing the two versions. To skip that step, map *.md to DocuFlow in the workbench.diffEditorAssociations setting: VS Code then opens such a diff as two DocuFlow editors side by side, and the extension folds them into one.
