iTheta AI Nodebuilder

iTheta AI Nodebuilder is a VS Code extension for creating and maintaining Node-RED custom nodes from your local workspace. Start with a local scaffold, then connect to iTheta Nodebuilder when you want guided planning, workspace sync, approved code edits, test runs, and rollback support.

What You Can Do

  • Create a starter Node-RED custom node project without configuring hosted services first.
  • Open an existing Node-RED custom node workspace and inspect its project state.
  • Connect VS Code to iTheta Nodebuilder for hosted agent assistance.
  • Sync selected workspace files so Nodebuilder can understand your project context.
  • Ask for changes and review a proposed plan before implementation.
  • Apply approved edits to your local files.
  • Run project tests from the extension.
  • Revert the last Nodebuilder change group when you need to roll back.

Requirements

  • VS Code 1.90.0 or newer.
  • Node.js and npm for local project setup and test execution.
  • An iTheta account and Nodebuilder access for hosted planning, sync, edits, and rollback.

First Run

  1. Install and open the extension in VS Code.
  2. Open the iTheta AI Nodebuilder activity bar view.
  3. Open a folder where your custom node project should live.
  4. Select Add Node to scaffold a starter Node-RED custom node project, or open an existing custom node workspace.
  5. When you are ready for hosted agent help, select Configure MCP and sign in with iTheta.
  6. Select Sync so Nodebuilder can read the tracked project files.
  7. Ask for the change you want, review the plan, and approve implementation when ready.

The welcome flow can be hidden permanently with Do not show again. You can reopen it from the command palette with Nodebuilder: Show Welcome. Add Node is available with an open local folder. Sync and Revert Last Change appear after hosted Nodebuilder access is configured.

Typical Workflow

  1. Open your Node-RED custom node workspace in VS Code.
  2. Use Add Node if you want Nodebuilder to scaffold a starter project.
  3. Select Sync so Nodebuilder can read the tracked project files.
  4. Ask for the change you want.
  5. Review the proposed plan.
  6. Approve the plan when you are ready for local edits.
  7. Run tests when prompted.
  8. Use Revert Last Change if you need to roll back the most recent Nodebuilder change group.

Settings

Nodebuilder uses these VS Code settings:

  • itheta-ai-nodebuilder.mcpServerUrl: Nodebuilder MCP server URL.
  • itheta-ai-nodebuilder.debugMode: Enables additional diagnostic logging when available.

Session credentials for hosted Nodebuilder access are stored in VS Code Secret Storage.
