Gaionix Coder for VS Code
Gaionix Coder adds a persistent coding-agent chat to VS Code. The extension starts a local Rust runtime and communicates with it over JSON Lines. Workspace tools execute locally; prompts, selected context, and tool results may be sent to the provider you select.
- Visual Studio Code 1.106 or newer.
- A supported provider account and credential for model requests.
- This v1.0.0 release artifact is built and validated for macOS Apple Silicon (
darwin-arm64). Other operating systems and architectures are not included in this release.
Install Gaionix Coder from the Visual Studio Marketplace, or install the matching VSIX from a trusted release source. Open a trusted project folder, select the Gaionix Coder Activity Bar view, open provider settings, enter a credential, choose a model, and save. Fetching model metadata contacts the selected provider.
The extension stores credentials with VS Code SecretStorage. For the Gaionix Gateway provider, the endpoint is managed by the application. For OpenAI-compatible services, set gaionixCoder.custom.baseUrl and gaionixCoder.custom.model in VS Code settings. Choose provider, model, and reasoning settings yourself; the extension does not automatically choose a cheaper model.
Quickstart
- Open a project folder and start a Gaionix Coder chat.
- Ask for an inspection or coding task.
- Review requested tool actions and proposed diffs before approving them.
- Use Stop to request cancellation when needed. Cancellation cannot retract a request already received by a provider.
Agent controls
- Continue: Continue eligible work from the existing conversation. Interrupted or uncertain work can remain blocked until its safety state is resolved.
- Compact: Run
/compact to request a summary checkpoint for older context. The request uses the selected provider and may incur charges. Invalid, incomplete, or truncated summaries are rejected without replacing the previous valid checkpoint.
- Retry: Retry an eligible failed or cancelled turn using a fresh attempt identity. The UI protects uncertain submissions from blind replay; inspect the visible identifiers and outcome first.
- Queue: Prompts submitted during an active turn can wait in the runtime-owned queue. Queue acceptance and execution are separate states. An
UNKNOWN result means acceptance could not be established; an empty current queue does not prove that an earlier prompt never ran.
- Steer: Send additional direction to an active turn. A rejected steering request remains available for review; steering is not a guarantee that work already performed will be undone.
Chats and recovery records are stored locally. Session restoration uses runtime event history and preserves unresolved execution states conservatively.
The runtime can inspect files, search the workspace, propose edits, show diffs, and run supported shell commands. The default access mode asks before eligible mutations. Review the operation, paths, command, and resulting diff. Plan mode applies the runtime's read-only tool policy. Approval does not replace independent review.
Privacy and cost
Credentials use VS Code SecretStorage. Prompts, selected workspace context, and tool observations may leave the machine for inference at the selected provider. Local session files can contain prompts and responses. Provider pricing, retention, and availability vary; check the provider's current terms. Normal turns, model discovery, and /compact are not guaranteed to be free.
Troubleshooting
- Runtime does not start: Verify VS Code 1.106+, macOS Apple Silicon, and that the installed package matches the platform. Run Gaionix Coder: Copy Diagnostics.
- Provider or model error: Check the selected provider/model and re-enter the credential in provider settings. Never put credentials in a report.
- Custom endpoint fails: Verify the base URL and compatibility with the OpenAI-compatible chat-completions behavior used by the runtime.
- Queue or session is unresolved: Preserve its
UNKNOWN status and inspect the identifiers. Do not blindly resubmit work that may already have executed.
- Report an issue: Include product/runtime version, VS Code and OS versions, provider name (not the credential), sanitized diagnostics, and reproduction steps. Remove private paths and source excerpts.
Update and uninstall
Marketplace updates are delivered through VS Code's extension manager. To uninstall, open Extensions, select Gaionix Coder, and choose Uninstall. Uninstalling the extension does not itself erase locally stored session data; manage session storage separately if you want to remove it.
