Earth Data Science

GIS, Scientific Variables and Interactive Maps for Visual Studio Code.

Interactive Python Console · Variable Explorer · Scientific Plots · Geospatial Views

GeoIDE keeps Python execution, scientific data inspection and spatial exploration together in one workspace. Run code, inspect the variables it creates, then move directly into an interactive map or plot.

Interactive Map — 2D and 3D

GeoIDE Interactive Map with a worldwide satellite view in 2D and a Point Cloud in 3D

  • Explore raster and vector data over a worldwide satellite basemap.
  • Choose bands, dates and RGB composites; adjust colours, opacity and layer order.
  • Inspect values, edit supported vector layers and refresh them from the live Python variable.
  • View supported Point Clouds in 2D or 3D, change their style and point budget, inspect points and measure distances.

Esri World Imagery is the default worldwide satellite background. It is requested directly from Esri's public tile endpoint, without a GeoIDE API key, account, payment method or proxy. Esri controls its availability and terms.

Interactive Plots

GeoIDE interactive scientific time-series plot

  • Create histograms, scatter plots and time series directly from compatible variables.
  • Choose series, axes, slices, dates, aggregation and variability from the controls.
  • Pan, zoom, reset and download the current view.
  • Keep Matplotlib, seaborn, pandas, plotnine and Plotly figures produced by your Python code.

Variable Explorer

GeoIDE Variable Explorer with scientific and geospatial variables

  • Inspect NumPy arrays, pandas tables, xarray datasets and supported geospatial objects.
  • See type, dimensions, data type, estimated memory and spatial metadata at a glance.
  • Select any variable, including values that cannot be opened in Map, Plot or Table.
  • Use Select all / Deselect all and confirmed Delete selected to clean the current Python session and release GeoIDE previews.

Get started

GeoIDE requires Visual Studio Code 1.90 or later and a Python environment with these runtime packages:

python -m pip install "ipykernel>=6.29,<8" "jupyter_client>=8.6,<9"

Install the scientific packages you use in that same environment, for example:

python -m pip install numpy pandas xarray matplotlib
  1. Open a trusted workspace and a Python file.
  2. Run GeoIDE: Select Python Environment from the Command Palette.
  3. Add a # %% cell and choose GeoIDE's Run Cell, Run Above or Run Below action.
  4. Inspect the resulting variables, then use Show Plot or Open Interactive Map.

Geospatial features use the corresponding packages from your environment, such as GeoPandas, Rasterio, rioxarray or laspy. GeoIDE never installs or updates Python packages automatically.

Controls

Action Windows / Linux macOS
Run cell Ctrl+Alt+Enter Cmd+Alt+Enter
Run selection Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Enter Cmd+Alt+Shift+Enter
Run file Ctrl+Alt+Shift+R Cmd+Alt+Shift+R

Interrupt cancels the current execution where possible. Restart starts a fresh Python session. Stop ends it and clears its variables. Separate Python files use independent sessions.

Privacy, scope and support

Python runs in the selected environment on the Visual Studio Code workspace host. GeoIDE has no analytics telemetry and no hosted data-upload service. Online backgrounds contact their tile providers directly, so those providers receive the connection IP and the tile coordinates needed for the visible map. Choose None dark or None light for a background that does not use an online map service.

Large spatial datasets use bounded interactive previews; a preview is not a full-resolution export. GeoIDE does not provide Python breakpoints, remote Python-server connections, general widget support, browser-only workspaces or virtual workspaces.

For questions and reproducible problems, use the public GeoIDE support and issue tracker. The support repository contains documentation and the product license, not GeoIDE's proprietary development source.

GeoIDE is free to use, including for commercial work, under the proprietary license included in the extension. No subscription is required for this version. Third-party components and online services retain their own licenses, terms and visible attribution. See THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md in the extension package for details.
