WannaCode

WannaCode brings programming exercises from wannacode.dev into VS Code. Read a task beside its source file, write a solution and check it on your computer. Instructions and hints are available in Bulgarian and English.

This is a beta published by Evo Tech.

Start an exercise

  1. Open a folder in VS Code and select WannaCode in the Activity Bar.
  2. Choose Start or resume learning, then select a programming language.
  3. Read the task and open its prepared file. Write your code at TODO and keep the supplied preparation unchanged.
  4. Save the file and select Check my code. Compare the expected result with your result if a check fails.
  5. A green Completed message means all required checks passed for the saved code. Editing the code requires another check.

The checker supplies example values automatically. You only need to read from input when the task asks you to. Hint gives help in stages. Theory opens the matching lesson on the website.

Included courses

Language Exercises Required installation
Java 145 JDK 21 or newer, including javac
Python 132 Python 3.9 or newer for the new course
JavaScript 132 Node.js 20 or newer
C# 132 .NET SDK 9 or newer
SQL 3 Python 3 with SQLite

The four main courses cover first programs, variables, input, conditions, loops, functions or methods, OOP, files, collections and testing. Java also includes threads, local networking, JDBC and reflection. These advanced topics are not yet included in the other three courses. Five supplemental C# text/file topics link to the course overview because matching website pages are unavailable.

There are 544 exercises and 548 separately checked steps. Python testing uses unittest; JavaScript uses node:test. C# uses a small assertion helper rather than xUnit. Java's registered JUnit and SQLite JDBC libraries are included.

You only need the runtime for the language you choose. Set up runtime explains what is missing and links to installation instructions. No installer runs automatically.

Learning tools

Focus keeps the code and task visible using VS Code Zen Mode. Press Escape twice or choose Exit focus to return.

Optional Ask Copilot requests a hint using your available model. After consent, it sends the current task, code and relevant check context to the provider. Ordinary hints work without Copilot. Independent practice opens a separate workspace with code suggestions disabled; it does not block chats or external tools.

Java has a local progress view and optional review schedule. Git tools are optional and require review before publishing code.

Your files and feedback

Core practice needs no WannaCode account or backend. Code and progress are stored in the current VS Code profile. There is no WannaCode telemetry. Back up the extension storage folder when moving computers or deleting a profile.

Report a problem or suggestion prepares an email to wannacode@evotech.bg for you to review and send. The report adds versions, system information and the current exercise/check status. It does not automatically add source code, paths, logs or attachments. You can copy the report instead of opening an email app.

If you used the earlier local extension wannacode.wannacode, disable it before enabling evotech.wannacode. Existing learning storage is reused when the new identity has no learning data. Files are not copied or deleted. Code-execution and Copilot consent are requested again.

Beta scope

Tested locally on macOS arm64 with VS Code 1.96, including installation, restart, real runtime checks and preservation of learner files. Windows/Linux, full screen-reader use, live Copilot accounts and beginner learning outcomes remain unverified. Passing local checks is practice evidence, not certification. Code execution is not a complete security sandbox; run only code you trust.
