XMD
Calculated notes, checklists, and timers in Markdown-style files, powered by the
XMD language server.
Quick start
- Open a trusted workspace and create a file ending in
.x.md or .xmd.
- If XMD is not already on your PATH, accept the prompt to download its language
server from the matching GitHub release.
- Write a note with calculations:
# Trip expenses
$90:car
$30:food
total := car + food
each := total / 3
We each owe [each].
- [ ] Pack a camera
- [x] Book the train
XMD displays the calculated values beside your text: total is $120 and
each is $40. Semantic highlighting, inline results, and task controls are
enabled by default for XMD files.
Language server
Automatic downloads support macOS and Linux on x64 and ARM64. On other
platforms, provide a compatible XMD executable yourself. The extension runs in
the workspace environment, including when using a remote workspace.
xmd.serverPath: absolute path to an existing XMD executable. When empty,
the extension checks PATH before offering a download.
xmd.autoDownload: allow the extension to offer a language-server download.
- XMD: Restart Language Server: restart after changing the executable or
configuration.
The extension verifies downloaded archives against the release's SHA-256
checksums. It requires a trusted workspace and does not support virtual
workspaces.
See the project documentation for more
examples, installation options, and language features.
Install from source
From a source checkout, run at the
repository root:
make vscode
code --install-extension dist/xmd.vsix
Alternatively, use the XMD installer with --editor vscode to configure the
server path and highlighting while preserving existing preferences.
