Chauffeur for VS Code

Pick up exactly where you left off. Chauffeur saves the files and workspace folders you had open and restores them in a single click — across every VS Code window you had running.

⚠️ Requires the Chauffeur desktop app (Windows). Start with a free trial at https://emaginasion.com — this extension is the bridge that lets Chauffeur talk to VS Code. On its own it does nothing.

What it does

  • 📂 Captures your open files, the active file, and all workspace folders — in every open VS Code window.
  • 🔄 Restores them on demand: folders are reopened, files are reopened, your active file is brought back into focus.
  • 🪟 Multi-window aware — each window's context is saved and restored separately.
  • 🔌 Zero configuration — it finds the running Chauffeur app automatically.

Why Chauffeur?

You don't just work in VS Code. You work in VS Code and a dozen browser tabs, an Excel sheet, a Notepad++ scratchpad. Chauffeur saves your whole working state — across all those apps — and brings it back the next morning. This extension is the VS Code piece of that picture.

100% local. No cloud. No telemetry.

Everything stays on your machine. The extension only ever talks to the Chauffeur app on 127.0.0.1 (localhost) — nothing is sent to any server, ever. Your code paths never leave your computer.

Getting started

  1. Get the Chauffeur app from https://emaginasion.com (free trial).
  2. Install this extension.
  3. Use Chauffeur to Save Context — then Restore whenever you want your workspace back.

Run "Show Chauffeur VS Code Status" from the Command Palette to verify the bridge is connected.

Windows only. Chauffeur is a local context service for your whole desktop — VS Code, browsers, Office and more.
