Simple GitHub Workflow Runner

Run GitHub Actions workflows that have a workflow_dispatch trigger, without leaving VS Code. Pick a workflow, pick a branch, fill in the inputs and press Run.

Features

  • Workflow Runner panel next to Terminal and Problems, for the repository open in VS Code.
  • Lists every workflow in the repository that can be started manually.
  • Branch picker with all remote branches. Inputs are read from the workflow file on the selected branch, so new or changed inputs show up as soon as they are pushed.
  • Form fields for every input type: string, choice, boolean, number and environment.
  • Checks required fields, numbers and choice values before starting the run.
  • Link to the run you just started, and a list of your 5 most recent runs with live status.
  • Remembers the last branch and input values per workflow.
  • Presets: save a workflow, branch and inputs under a name with Save as preset, then Run it with one click, Load it into the form, or Delete it.

Getting started

  1. Open a folder that is a git repository with a github.com remote.
  2. Open the Workflow Runner tab in the bottom panel.
  3. Sign in with your GitHub account when asked.
  4. Choose a workflow and a branch, fill in the inputs and press Run workflow.

Requirements

  • A repository hosted on github.com. GitHub Enterprise Server is not supported.
  • Permission to run workflows in that repository.
  • The built-in VS Code GitHub sign-in, with the repo and workflow scopes.
  • If your organization enforces SAML single sign-on, click Authorize SSO in the panel when it appears.
  • When working in a dev container or remote session, install the extension on the remote side.

Privacy and security

  • Uses your VS Code GitHub session; no personal access token is needed.
  • Talks only to api.github.com. No telemetry is collected.
  • Remembered input values are stored locally in VS Code workspace storage. Inputs whose names look like secrets (for example token, password, authorization) are never stored.
  • Presets are also stored locally in workspace storage and keep all their input values, including secret-like ones, as plain text. Avoid saving secrets in presets.

Known limitations

  • In multi-root workspaces, the first repository with a github.com remote is used.
  • GitHub does not return the id of a dispatched run, so the extension finds it by looking for the newest run started by you on the selected branch.
  • New workflow files appear after Refresh.
