DevGhost for IDE

Estimate developer effort and Ghost% from Git history in VS Code or Cursor. Analysis runs on your computer: source code is not uploaded and no LLM is used.

The first store package is a preview for Windows 10 or 11 on x64. A macOS store package is not included in this release.

What it does

  • Reads local Git history and estimates effort in hours for each commit and developer.
  • Shows Ghost%: each developer's estimated output compared with a reference developer. 100% is a full-time mid-level developer who knows the project and works without AI.
  • Filters analytics by repository, person and date.
  • Exports the selected view to PDF, Excel or JSON on your computer.
  • Merges several e-mail addresses into one person and lets you classify or exclude contributors.
  • Includes 500 free credits each calendar month. One credit covers one analysed commit; previously analysed commits are reused without another charge.

Install from an extension store

The store release is distributed as a pre-release for Windows x64.

  • In VS Code, open Extensions, search for DevGhost, open DevGhost for IDE, and choose Install Pre-Release Version.
  • In Cursor, open Extensions, search Open VSX for DevGhost, open DevGhost for IDE, and choose the pre-release version.

Install offline from a VSIX

  1. Download the Windows x64 VSIX from the DevGhost for IDE download page.
  2. In VS Code or Cursor, open Extensions, choose ... at the top of the view, then Install from VSIX....
  3. Select the downloaded file.

Getting started

Open DevGhost from the activity bar. The first screen offers two paths:

  • Try the sample analyses the bundled Ghost Cafe project with a fictional team. It is free, offline and does not use credits.
  • Analyze my project opens the analysis form for a Git repository from a trusted workspace. Choose a branch and period, review the commits and credit estimate, then start the pinned analysis.

The extension requires VS Code 1.95 or newer (or Cursor), Git, and a trusted workspace. DevGhost reads the current local branch. It does not fetch, pull, check out or modify the repository.

Common tasks

Analyze a repository for a period

  1. Open Analyses, then Analyze, or choose Analyze on a repository page.
  2. Choose the branch and period, then select Build preview. No credits are spent at this step.
  3. Review the commits, authors and price. Deselect an author and update the preview if needed.
  4. Select Start this pinned analysis. The analytics open when the run finishes.

Existing commits are not duplicated in analytics. Compatible results already paid for are reused without another charge.

Add or remove a repository

Use Repositories -> Add repository and choose a local Git repository. DevGhost does not change its files. Removing a repository deletes its stored results permanently; credits are not returned, and analysing it again is charged as new.

Merge identities or leave someone out

Open a person and choose Merge into... to combine e-mail addresses. Undo merge remains available in Curation history for 90 days. Use Classify or Exclude from analytics to change who appears in analytics; these actions do not delete commits.

Export and recover

Use Export current slice on Overview or a person page, or Export on a repository page, to create PDF, Excel or JSON locally. If a run fails, open it in Analyses, choose Retry analysis..., and review the same commits and price before starting. Repeated failures can be exported from Technical details as a cleaned diagnostic package.

Credits

Select the balance in the DevGhost header to open Credits and see the installation ID. When purchases are available, Buy credits opens the DevGhost billing page in the browser. The signed credit file is imported on the Credits page; analysis remains local and works offline.

Privacy and network use

Source code, Git history, developer names and e-mail addresses stay in the extension's local storage. The extension sends no telemetry.

Network access happens only after a user action:

  • Compare with server runs git ls-remote with the user's existing Git authentication.
  • Buy credits opens the DevGhost website in the browser.
  • Write to support opens a draft in the user's mail client; the user decides whether to send it.

Diagnostics are created locally and exclude source code, paths, names and e-mail addresses. See the DevGhost Privacy Notice for the public policy and PRIVACY.md in the installed package for the packaged notice.

Languages

The interface and reports support English, Russian, German, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Arabic, Japanese, Korean, French, Simplified Chinese, Italian, Turkish, Polish, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Ukrainian, Thai, Czech, Hindi, Dutch and Hebrew. Russian is offered when the editor language is Russian.

Support and license

Use Settings -> Support -> Write to support, or e-mail support@mail.devghost.pro. DevGhost is proprietary software with a free tier. The installed LICENSE.md contains the terms; third-party notices are in assets/THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.txt.
