Terminal Execution Sounds 🔊

A sleek, lightweight Visual Studio Code extension that plays custom audio cues (success.wav / failure.wav or your own custom audio files) on terminal command executions and build tasks.

🎨 Terminal Sound Studio (Interactive UI Dashboard)

Version 1.2.0 includes a dedicated visual control center right inside VS Code:

  • Visual Audio Cards: Inspect active file paths, source (Bundled vs Custom), and preview tones with one click.
  • Master Volume Slider: Smooth slider (5% to 100%) so you can set the exact loudness you want.
  • Smart Build & Run Switch: Toggle between smart filtering (only builds/runs) or all commands.
  • Ignore Ctrl+C Switch: Prevent failure sounds when manually cancelling long processes.
  • Ignored Commands Tag Manager: Visually see, add, or delete ignored commands (clear, cls, exit, etc.) with interactive tag chips.
  • Live Terminal Simulator: One-click buttons to launch real test commands in an integrated terminal.

To open the dashboard:

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + P ➔ Terminal Sound: Open Sound Studio Dashboard...
  • Or click $(bell) Sounds in the status bar ➔ Open Sound Studio Dashboard...

🎵 Custom Tones & Audio Support

🎶 Supported Formats:

  • .wav (native instant playback)
  • .mp3
  • .m4a / .aac
  • .ogg
  • .flac
  • .wma

🛠️ How to Set Your Own Custom Tones

Method 1: Using the Interactive File Picker (Easiest)

  1. Open the Command Palette (Ctrl + Shift + P).
  2. Choose:
    • Terminal Sound: Choose Custom Success Tone...
    • Terminal Sound: Choose Custom Failure Tone...
  3. Select any audio file from your computer.
  4. Choose whether to apply it Globally (for all your projects) or For this Workspace only.
  5. It will immediately play a preview of your selected tone!

Method 2: From the Status Bar Menu

  1. Click the $(bell) Sounds icon in the bottom right status bar.
  2. Click Choose Custom Success Tone... or Choose Custom Failure Tone....
  3. You can also preview active tones or reset back to default tones anytime.

Method 3: Drop Audio Files in Your Project

Simply drop your audio files directly in your project root or sounds/ folder:

  • success.wav or success.mp3
  • failure.wav or failure.mp3 The extension will automatically prioritize workspace audio files over bundled defaults.

🎯 Intelligent Execution Detection

🔇 What is SILENT (No Success Sound):

  • Version checks (e.g. node -v, python --version, cargo -V, git --version)
  • Help queries (e.g. git --help, python -h, help cd, man ls)
  • Basic shell / navigation commands (e.g. cd, ls, dir, pwd, clear, cls, echo, cat, touch, mkdir, rm)
  • Read-only Git commands (e.g. git status, git branch, git log, git diff)
  • Empty commands (pressing Enter on a blank prompt)
  • Cancelled commands (Ctrl+C / SIGINT)

🔊 What TRIGGERS the Success Sound:

  • Builds & Compilers: npm run build, make, cmake, gcc main.c, g++, tsc, esbuild, cargo build, dotnet build, etc.
  • Code Execution: node -e "...", python script.py, node app.js, cargo run, go run main.go, dotnet run, ruby app.rb, etc.
  • Start & Dev Servers: npm start, npm run dev, yarn dev, pnpm dev, etc.
  • Test Frameworks: pytest, npm test, jest, vitest, cargo test, go test, etc.
  • Local Binaries & Scripts: ./a.out, .\app.exe, ./build.sh, .\test.ps1, etc.
  • VS Code Tasks: Any task executed via Terminal > Run Build Task... or tasks.json.
