Project Zomboid Tile & Texture Pack Viewer
Open Project Zomboid's binary tile files directly in VS Code, without starting TileZed or the game.
.pack texture packs: browse the atlas pages, see where every sprite sits and export any of them as PNG.
.tiles tile definitions: see every tileset as a grid of real sprites with the properties of each tile (CustomName, Facing, Material, IsMoveAble…).

Features
Texture pack viewer (.pack)
- Each atlas page is drawn with the frame of every sprite. Zoom goes from Fit to 400 %, and the frames can be hidden.
- The sprite list can be filtered by name. Hovering a sprite highlights it both in the list and in the atlas.
- The inspector shows the sprite's position, packed size, offset and full frame size (for example
128 × 256). A button copies its name.
- Export:
- the original page PNG;
- a sprite in its full frame, at its in-game offset;
- a trimmed sprite (only the packed pixels).
- Supports
PZPK version 1 packs and legacy packs (no header, pages ending with 0xDEADBEEF). Large packs are indexed without being loaded in memory, and page images are read only when displayed.
Tile definitions viewer (.tiles)
- Each tileset is drawn as a grid of
columns × rows tiles, using the sprites <tileset>_<index> found in nearby texture packs.
- Each tile shows its index and its number of properties. Tiles with no sprite have a dashed border.
- The inspector shows the tile's sprite, its source pack and page, and all its properties in file order. Properties without a value are shown as flag. You can copy them as
Name = Value lines.
- The filter matches a tileset name, a sprite name, or a property name or value. Matching properties are highlighted in the inspector.
- Clicking a pack in the Sprites from bar opens it in the pack viewer.
- Supports
tdef version 1 files and legacy files without a header.
The view reloads automatically when the file, or a pack it uses, changes on disk, for example after exporting from TileZed.
Where sprites are looked up
For a .tiles file, the sprite <tileset>_<index> is searched in:
- the
texturepacks folder next to the .tiles file;
- inside a mod (
…/mods/<mod>/…): <mod>/media/texturepacks and every <mod>/*/media/texturepacks (common, 42, …);
- the folders listed in
pzTilesViewer.additionalPackFolders.
When a sprite exists in several packs, the one with the largest frame is used (2x over 1x).
If a tile is in no pack, the viewer falls back to the tileset image (imageSource, for example mtir_sewing_01.png), split into columns × rows cells. That image is looked up next to the .tiles file and in pzTilesViewer.tilesheetFolders.
Settings
| Setting |
Description |
pzTilesViewer.additionalPackFolders |
Extra folders searched for .pack files. Add the game's media/texturepacks folder to view vanilla tiles, for example newtiledefinitions.tiles. |
pzTilesViewer.tilesheetFolders |
Folders searched for tileset PNGs when a tile is in no pack, for example your TileZed Tilesets folder. |
After changing a setting, click Reload in the viewer.
Opening files
.tiles files and .pack files located in a texturepacks folder open in the viewer by default.
- Other
.pack files keep their usual editor, because many tools use this extension. To view one as a Project Zomboid texture pack, right-click it → Open With… → PZ Texture Pack Viewer.
