CodShot for Visual Studio Code

Your CodShot snippets, right inside VS Code.

CodShot connects your editor to your personal code workspace at codshot.com. Browse saved snippets, explore projects and nested collections, preview full source code and reuse it without switching tools.

Features

  • Workspace sidebar: browse your own Projects, nested Collections, root snippets and an All snippets list.
  • Connection panel: connect, change your API key or disconnect without opening the Command Palette.
  • Find snippets: search your CodShot snippets from the editor.
  • Preview code: open a snippet in a read-only VS Code editor tab with language highlighting.
  • Insert or copy: insert a snippet into your active editor or copy its code to the clipboard.
  • Save to CodShot: save selected code or an entire active file as a new private snippet.
  • Choose a destination: a searchable, expandable Project / Collection tree in the Save snippet editor tab.
  • Native file icons: snippet icons follow your VS Code file icon theme.
  • Direct context-menu commands: CodShot - Save snippet and CodShot - Insert snippet.

Getting started

  1. Sign in to CodShot.
  2. In My Settings → API keys, create an API key with Workspace read access. To save snippets, also enable the create private snippets permission. API key availability may depend on the CodShot account.
  3. In VS Code, open the CodShot sidebar and select Connect CodShot in the Connection panel.
  4. Enter the key in the masked field inside the Connection panel and click Connect. The key is verified by the extension host and stored with VS Code SecretStorage. To replace it later, select Change API key in the Connection panel; the previous key remains saved if you cancel or verification fails.
  5. Use the CodShot icon in the Activity Bar to browse, open, insert or copy snippets.
  6. To save code, select text in an editor and right-click CodSHot - Save snippet. Choose the source, details and destination, then explicitly confirm.

Security and privacy

  • The API key is stored using VS Code's SecretStorage. Use Disconnect in the Connection panel to remove the locally stored key, and Revoke in CodShot My Settings to invalidate the key on the server.
  • Network requests containing the API key go only to https://codshot.com, over HTTPS.
  • The extension does not automatically upload files, synchronize repositories, run AI tools, or modify your CodShot snippets in the background.
  • New snippets saved by the extension are private by default. Read/write API permissions are enforced by the CodShot server.
  • Read-only previews use in-memory VS Code virtual documents. No source files are created on disk by the preview feature.

Requirements

  • Visual Studio Code 1.90 or newer.
  • A CodShot account with API key access and an active, appropriately scoped key.
  • An internet connection to the CodShot API.

Note: CodShot Project Brain integration, automatic project sync and bidirectional editing of existing snippets are not part of this release.
