Export an Azure Boards query to a styled .xlsx workbook with its hierarchy intact.

Treefold adds an Export to Excel (Treefold) action to query results. Choose the columns and hierarchy layout, then download a workbook with readable rich text, identity display names and sortable Excel dates. The Export info sheet records the query and export details, including skipped work item IDs.

Treefold export setup: choose columns and keep the query hierarchy

At a glance Treefold
Queries Flat lists and trees, up to 20,000 work items
Output Excel .xlsx, with hierarchy and an Export info sheet
Setup Choose columns, hierarchy, readable rich text and wrapping
Loading Visible preparation steps; work item details are read when you export
Access Uses your Azure DevOps sign-in; does not change work items
Price Free; no Bacumi account required

Choose what goes into your workbook

Open your query results and choose Export to Excel (Treefold). Pick the columns you need, arrange their order, and choose how to show the hierarchy. Treefold remembers your choices for the next export of that query.

What you get

  • A frozen, filterable header row, with Parent ID and Work Item Type as fixed columns on every export.
  • Tree hierarchy shown as indentation — which also drives Excel's own row outline, so the tree can be collapsed like any other outline — or as a level column, your choice.
  • A styled workbook: a branded header, a light fill on the top two tree levels so the shape of the hierarchy is visible at a glance, and each ID linking back to the work item in your brand colour.
  • Rich-text fields (descriptions, acceptance criteria) as clean, readable text, including a link's target and separated table cells, not raw HTML — with an optional "wrap text" setting for long values.
  • Identity fields as display names; dates in your own time zone.
  • Your column and layout choices are remembered per query.
  • An Export info sheet records the query, project, export time, item counts, skipped IDs and format settings, together with the WIQL and Treefold version.

See progress while your query loads

The export window appears before the full application loads. Query results, available fields and saved preferences load in parallel. Preparation steps show what is ready, with the actual item count as soon as the query responds. Cancel stays available, and work item details are loaded in batches only when you export.

Ready to share, with the context included

The workbook keeps work item links, readable rich text and real Excel dates. Its Export info sheet makes it easier to see where the result came from.

How Treefold represents hierarchy

For a tree query, choose indentation with an Excel outline or a sortable level column. Flat queries are exported as a flat list. Parent ID and Work Item Type are included as fixed columns.

Your export and privacy

Treefold reads the query and work items from your Azure DevOps organization using your signed-in permissions. It generates the workbook in your browser; the download contains selected organization data and is saved to your device through your browser's download feature. Handle the file under your organization's data-sharing rules. The extension has no Bacumi backend and collects no usage analytics.

Scope

  • Works on flat and tree queries, up to 20,000 items. One-hop (linked-item) queries are not yet supported.
  • Read-only: Treefold never changes a work item.

Permissions and privacy

Item Detail
Scope vso.work: read-only access to work items — Treefold reads the query and its items, and never writes anything back.
Where data goes The extension reads work item data from Azure DevOps and generates the workbook in your browser. The downloaded workbook contains organization data and is saved on your device. The extension has no Bacumi backend.
Backend None. Treefold has no Bacumi server.
Analytics None. Treefold does not collect usage analytics.

Pricing

Treefold is currently free to install and use, with no Bacumi account or payment card required. The downloaded workbook contains the data you chose to export and leaves Azure DevOps through your browser's download.

Release notes

  • Export setup uses a wider dialog, with columns beside hierarchy and formatting options when there is enough space; narrow windows keep a stacked layout.
  • The window appears before the application finishes loading. Query results, fields and preferences load concurrently, with visible preparation steps.
  • Workbook exports include Parent ID, Work Item Type, a collapsible Excel outline or Level column, and the Export info sheet with query details and skipped IDs.

Getting started

  1. Ask your organization administrator to install Treefold from the Marketplace.
  2. In Boards → Queries, run a flat or tree query.
  3. Open the query results action menu and choose Export to Excel (Treefold).
  4. Choose and reorder your columns, select a hierarchy layout, then export.
  5. Open the downloaded workbook. Use Export info to check counts and settings.

Frequently asked questions

Does it update work items? No. Treefold is read-only.

Which queries work? Flat and tree queries, with up to 20,000 work items. One-hop (linked-item) queries are not supported. Narrow a larger query before exporting.

Why are some items missing? Your Azure DevOps permissions still apply. Check the exported and skipped counts and skipped IDs in Export info.

Where is my workbook created? In your browser. The download contains your organization's work item data; share it using your organization's normal rules.

Troubleshooting

Run the query again before exporting if its results have changed. If loading fails, check that you can open the query and its work items in Azure DevOps, then use Retry. Check your browser's downloads if export completes but the workbook is not visible.

Availability

Available for Azure DevOps Services. Azure DevOps Server compatibility has not been validated. Check the exported workbook in the Excel client your team uses before sharing it.
