Relay Collab

Developer collaboration inside the editor. Join a session, see who is around, share snippets and files, watch a viewport or window, and talk in voice — without leaving the work.

Relay usage

Open the Relay activity bar. Start or join a room from the Session panel — no account needed, just a name. Files, Screen, and Voice appear after you join. Drop files into the session, watch a shared viewport or window, and talk on the voice channel.

One code does everything. There is no address to look up or type.

On the host

  1. Relay: Start Session and give it a name, then the name others will see.
  2. The first time, Relay asks whether people you invite may connect to this computer. It accepts connections only while Relay is open.
  3. Relay shows a code like 7QMB-K3F9-4TXP-2R. Send it however you like.

No account is involved. Your name is used for that session and kept nowhere after it, so the next one asks again.

On the guest

  1. Relay: Join With A Code, paste the code, and enter a name.
  2. Wait — the host sees "your name wants to join" and decides.

Codes work between machines on the same network. A code stops working when the host closes the session, so hand out a fresh one next time.

Letting people in. Every join waits for the host, who sees only the guest's name. Denying leaves them out; holding the code is never enough by itself.

Hosting for the internet. Deploy apps/api from the Relay repo, then set the advanced Relay: Api Url setting to that HTTPS origin on the host only. Codes then carry that server, so guests still just paste a code and need no setting of their own.

Commands

  • Relay: Start (or the status bar) — start a session, or join one

  • Relay: Start Session / Relay: Join With A Code

  • Relay: Copy Session Code — the code for the session you are in

  • Relay: Allow Others To Connect — change your mind about network access

  • Chat, clipboard, snippets, and files

  • Start Screen Share / Stop Screen Share

  • Join Voice / Leave Voice / Toggle Mute / Toggle Deafen

  • Relay: Sign In / Relay: Register / Relay: Sign Out — only for a Relay server you host, where accounts persist

Open the Relay activity bar. Use Session to start or join; Files, Screen, and Voice appear after you are in a room.

Privacy

The extension sends session data (account, chat, snippets, files, screen frames, and voice signaling) to the session server it is talking to — by default one it runs on your own computer. Tokens stay in Secret Storage. There is no third-party analytics. Relay never opens your computer to the network without asking, and a code alone does not admit anyone. If you point the advanced relay.apiUrl setting at a remote host, that host can see what you share.
