DevTracr for VS Code and Cursor

Logs your coding time to DevTracr, the developer learning diary, automatically. While you edit, the extension notes which project and language you're working in; DevTracr turns that into one Coding entry per project per day, with the real time you spent.

Get started

  1. Install DevTracr from the Extensions panel (Ctrl+Shift+X, search "DevTracr").
  2. Click DevTracr in the status bar at the bottom of the editor (or run DevTracr: Sign In).
  3. Your browser opens DevTracr. Sign in if asked, click Allow, and you're back in the editor, connected.

The status bar then shows today's coding time. Click it to sync, pause, open DevTracr or disconnect.

What counts

  • You're coding while you type, move the cursor, switch files or save, with the editor window focused.
  • Activity less than 15 minutes apart joins into one session; longer breaks don't count.
  • Time is added to the day in your DevTracr time zone, and an entry appears once a project has a minute of work.
  • If a DevTracr project has the same name as the workspace folder (ignoring case and punctuation), the entry is linked to it.
  • You can rename an entry or change its project; its time keeps updating from the editor. Deleting it also forgets that day's tracked time for the project.

Privacy

The extension sends only the time, the workspace folder name and the language id (for example typescript). It never sends code, file names or paths. Nothing is collected until you sign in, or while tracking is paused. The connection key is kept in the editor's secret storage. Disconnect any time from the status bar menu or in DevTracr under Settings → VS Code & Cursor.

If you're offline, heartbeats wait on this computer and are sent when DevTracr can be reached again.
